    left shell-shocked after Saints defeat.
Head coach Gus Poyet has issued a frank apology to Sunderland fans after the team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Southampton.

“I’m so sorry for the fans, it’s one hell of a trip to make and they were outstanding,” he told safc.com after watching his side beaten eight-nil.

“They got right behind the team throughout and there are no words I can use that will say sorry to them.”

Following the game the Uruguayan conceded that the loss on the south coast makes up the worst day during his time in football:
“I’ve never felt as bad on a football pitch, as a player or as a coach, as I do today. Even as a fan I’ve never felt this way, it’s embarrassing and unacceptable; I’m really hurt.”

Despite starting the game brightly, Sunderland were undone by a freak own goal in the 12th minute:

“We started off well, we were aggressive - we passed the ball well and then we conceded one of the most difficult goals to try and explain, and then the second goal we let in was just as unlucky,” Poyet continued.
“At that time I though we couldn’t get any worse luck; but I was wrong. We had the penalty claim, which the referee turned down, and from there I think we knew the game was not going to go in our favour.”

The Black Cats never recovered and the Saints ramped up the pressure on the shell-shocked visitors.
“Nothing went right, but there is another side in football,” Poyet added. “ We needed to be stronger and not give up; there is no place to hide out on the pitch and I am very disappointed with what I saw today.
    “But the fans were magnificent.
“After all their support I wanted to give them something back but we just couldn’t, it was not the day for that. It was a terrible feeling, we ask them for their support and we couldn’t give them anything back.”
He concluded: “It’s going to be a difficult week. We need to reassess things and make sure we don’t have another day like today.

“It’s unfortunate we have to wait a week to try and put it right but that’s all we can do.”

I'm a self confessed pessimist and i know i can let my emotions get the better of me on occasions like this, but Monty just takes the cake! I would say that I would have echoed his views when i was about 8 years old!

and three points behind 5th right? Today was a Premier League game. We lost 8 - 0 so we got no points. If we lost 1 - 0 we would have still got no points. These results come with the territory in the EPL. Next week we play a team called Arsenal...if my memory serves me correct wasn't it just a season or so ago they conceded 8 at Man Utd? The manager....what's his name...Wenger?....what happened to him.....oh that's right he's still manager...maybe 18 years now. I hope Gus is with us for 18 years. Great manager....give the lad time and a few more transfer windows to get us there.....can't believe some of the crap that gets posted on here. Let's move on to next week. We are in for a decent season.....but wait...anyone not on the Gus bus get off now and go **** yourselves....

We are 4th off bottom, 1 point ahead of 3rd off bottom, you were looking at a live table when Newcastle's game was still 0-0 <ok>

The only good thing about today is that it will never get any worse.

There had better be a positive reaction from the players after this.

I will take a hard working performance against Arsenal. As long as they try their bollocks off the result is secondary to me at the moment!
Of course i will also take a lucky 1-0 win, but i guess you know what i mean! I just dont think the players have the character to recover straight away! Hope Im wrong!
