No idea why, but I'm going to watch this right now on Channel 5. I have read 3 or 4 books on the subject and watched numerous documentaries, yet am still going to watch it! Strange how certain subjects hook us eh?
I watched the James Cameron film the other night for the first time in 10 years. I remember despising it as a kid. Having watched it again I think it's an unbelievably good film with an unbearably bad soundtrack.
Is it because most of these subjects involve 'the upper classes' I wonder? If it had been a cargo ship, with working class victims, I reckon it would've been quickly forgotten. It's like Lord Lucan, people still go on about that ffs. A bloke shagged the babysitter, got caught, whacked her on the head and legged it, ****ing big deal
99% proved to be a Polish Hairdresser recently mate! DNA testing and stuff has it pretty much nailed down. Josep Kominski I think his name is, Polish Jew who ended up institutionalised within a couple of years!
The difference with Titanic is that the vast majority of those who died were from the lower classes..
Yes that's true but most people don't see it that way. Every time it's on the news they talk about the fine crystal glasses, the jewellery & the luxury.
Regardless of the details, it must have been bloody terrifying for those on board...Particularly the less wealthy ones who by all accounts were locked below to stop them taking rich peoples places on the life boats..
That was one of those jokes that I just did not like mate... Because I was jealous that I hadn't made it!
Nah mate. It just amazes me that such a big ship had so few lifeboats and "men" got saved when so many women ended up dying. Oh and that if they had stayed at full stop there was a chance they could have saved the ship. But the upper classes bit does grate on me, when you know they locked the poor people down. The other subjects that fascinated me was the likes of Atlantis and UFO's. When I was younger I was one of those making Von Daniken rich with his bullshit theories.
Latest theory is that steerage passengers were thought an epidemic risk and the US Immigration insisted they were separated and restricted to steerage only, nothing to do with the shipping authorities.
I once heard there was a mummy on board as the reason. Wheres sanddancer to tell us about the western cover up...
