It also offends to watch the sight of talentless bimbos, like scary spice, put forward as expert judges of talent. She wouldn't recognise a treble clef if one hit her in the face.

Neither would their target audience, though. They're looking for marketable workers, not artists.

What gets some people so excited about the X Factor puppets though?

Nobody screamed and yelled at the spoons players who came 9th on Opportunity Knocks, yet they'll happily do it for some desperate wannabe murdering a Britney B side?

    What have I missed?

I'm aware of that, PNP. But, even the X factor must occasionally accidentally trip over some actual talent. The sight of her sitting in judgement on somebody who actually possesses some musical talent is infuriating.

It's all about the story, Lidls.
Cowell's clever enough to know that a talent show won't sell it anymore, so he added a reality TV element to it.
People watch it to see the characters that they like fighting against adversity and the knowledge that a bunch of them will fail is a bonus.
It's almost like a sport, but I think that wrestling may have coined a better phrase for it in Sports Entertainment.
They even have the face and heel thing going. Heroes that you want to see succeed and villains that you want to see vanquished.

It's all ****, of course, but it's quite well thought out, especially as a business.

She's only there to draw in viewers though, NSIS. Mums who used to like the Spice Girls will watch it, so their kids will too.
Older relatives will wonder why RuPaul is on ITV.

I wish they had John Lydon, Brian Sewell and Lily Savage on the panel so we could hear "you're f***ing ****" sneered at the contestants in three very distinctive ways. Oh, the tears <wah>

Yeah, "you're ****e. You are completely devoid of any natural talent whatsoever. But, I reckon you can make a bunch of 12yr old girls cream their knickers. Welcome aboard!"

I was a Buddy Holly fan, too. I believe Beatle Paul owns his music so there was an influence.
Of course, the Beatles had made so much money and had everything money could buy that they went nutty, introducing the womanizing Maharishi Yogi to the group with his ying tong crap.
But then again,it brought out some great stuff by Lennon.....and his "bed in" for peace or whatever was hysterical!
Oh those wonderful 60's.Where the hell was I??????

None of the above. I think cynical money making exercise would be more appropriate!..

The true experiment would be to shift the X Factor to the summer TV schedules.
No lead-up to the Xmas charts etc.

I was just thinking how important Buddy Holly turned out to be. He may have been as influential as anyone for what Americans called New Wave, those sharp, honed three minute songs, edgy, lean and hard not to dance to. Elvis Costello's whole persona was a hommage, I'd say.

Cheers, Sidney. I think we're very much in agreement.

New wave came in the aftermath of Punk. In the Uk punk was a cultural
landmark and by 77 was seen in every corner of Britain. I think it had
little impact in the US and gained more popularity in it's second wave in the
early 80's . In Britain the definition of New Wave may have been slightly different
than our American cousins . McLaren said it was bands that were not quite punk
but related. By 78 it had taken over from punk.
Classic acts would be Costello , Blondie , Talking Heads , XTC, Devo, etc
The term in the Uk ends by 81 but l think in the US the Second British Invasion bands
came under this term. In the Uk this was Synthpop , electro , alternative .

As we have many learned pop pickers we should name our top 10 from each decade,
    50's to 90's.
Here is mine from the 60's
    1) Gimme Shelter , Stones , Epic brilliance , what a chorus .
    2) Waterloo sunset , Kinks, London love in a song .
    3) Eight miles high, Byrds , apparently about a flight to Heathrow ?
    4) you got to hide your love , Beatles , Epsteins hidden sexuality .
    5) Sunshine of your love, Cream, rifftastic , blimey , I love it.
6). Itchycoo park , Small Faces , ****ney psychedelic from the micro mods.
7). for what it's worth , Buffalo Springfield , even if it's not about Vietnam .
8). Communication Breakdown, led Zepplin , rock had gone on overdrive .
    9 ) I am the Walrus, Beatles , Lennon goes bonkers .
    10) She's not there , Zombies , pops purist voice .
