Read this informative article earlier from the BEEB website

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-29601069

    Surprisingly they're -
more bicycles in Copenhagen than people, five times as many bicycles as cars,

I reckon we should do more to encourage cyclist, I drove around Cambridge city centre a couple of weeks ago - couldn't believe how many cyclist were on the road - the streets (that I drove on) were made to support pedal power,

Should we on the whole be a country to promote cycling more? the obvious advantages cut pollution congestion etc- I know Boris Johnson has a bike scheme in London - but its hardly used -
in London, for example, fewer than 4% of people pedalled their way to the office at the time of the 2011 census, despite a rapid rise in the numbers commuting by bicycle in the preceding decade. London Mayor Boris Johnson vowed last year to make London's streets "as popular with cyclists as the streets of Copenhagen or Amsterdam", but there is a long way to go

Could the North East do more to encourage pedal power especially in the city centres?

I remember until my late 20's I used to cycle everywhere I loved it

I'd be all for cyclists in Manchester if they all stuck to the rules of the road, the amount of them that run red lights is ridiculous and guess who gets the blame (and the bill) if they get hit?

There's hundreds of them cycle from south Manchester where I come from in the morning into town, and they seem to do a good job of staying in the cycle lane and trying to let the cars pass, but then you get towards the student areas and it just turns into utter chaos. 4 bikes all side by side holding up a line of traffic, then the idiots who don't look, or put their arm out when they're going round a stopped bus.

I can't stand them to be honest, there's better and safer ways of keeping fit. Them flashing front lights they use will end up with me punching one one day as well, I'm certain of that...why do they need to flash?

maybe town planners could or should investigate and invest in better bike pathways (flyovers)or segregated cycling roads - just filling up our town centres and cities with ever increasing gridlocked cars will not be sustainable in the long term something will have to give

I was there about a month ago. There was like a whole square just full of bikes round the side of the station like out the front in the picture.

If I'm based in the office all day (like today) then I bring my bike in. It's 3.5 miles although I normally do an extra 10 miles on a morning and night simply for the fitness and the fact that I need to lose a stone or two!!

There was a problem thoughm that there was so many parked on the side of footpaths, pedestrians had no room to walk, and heaven forbid you have to go in to the cycle lane when there is a cyclist hurtling along.

And who is going to pay for that diddles? The same people who use the roads but don't pay to use the roads?

Use the tanks and bombs to flatten the place, then rebuild cities to accommodate all modes of transport. Instead of the current state of trying to fit several things down a route which is too tight.

Aye loads of bikes in York. It's what your thread reminded me of. They're everywhere! Don't mind them, as pedestrian who doesn't drive or ride a bike I see both sides both in a positive and negative sense.

Joking aside we spent $57 billion on the military in 2013 that made us 5th! in the world ranking on warfare expenditure - and look at the **** we're in now- up to our necks in a potential long lasting Islamic war that we needn't have been involved in the first place

I'd rather we'd spent the money on our infrastructure and health

Or building a giant wall around the middle east? And air drop home grown terrorists? Or catapult, or human canonbaall?

Saddam and Asad and Gaddaffi were running quite a tight ship.
