Alan Shearer has warned Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United that there can be “no more excuses” as the Magpies’ season reaches a critical stage.

The legendary United striker has warned the win-less black and whites that they could be staring the Championship in the face if they aren’t careful.

Should United fail to beat Leicester City or Tottenham Hotspur in their remaining two fixtures of this month they will head into November still searching for that first win.

Newcastle’s greatest ever goalscorer feels that his old club are currently way short of the required standard after just five top flight victories in 2014 for Pardew’s side.

Speaking ahead of the 206 Dinner, which will celebrate Shearer’s career and raise funds for the Stroke Association next month, when asked on the current state of the club and how the fans are feeling, the iconic number 9 told the Chronicle: “It’s the same for me.

“I’m exactly the same as the fans at the minute - I’m one of them.

“I pay for my ticket and I’m the same.

“I am entitled to my opinion.

“It hasn’t been pleasant watching to be honest.

    “It’s been poor.”

With Newcastle in the bottom three going into the dark evenings Shearer feels that the problems at United haven’t just unfolded overnight.

He said: “It has been poor since January this year,

“The quicker we can get out of it the better.”

But he feels a tough scrap against relegation could lie ahead.

He said: “I don’t hold too much hope for us this season.

“I think it could be a long hard season for us.”

Pardew will prepare his players for another crunch fixture on Saturday against Leicester amidst a backdrop of pressure with sections of the Toon Army still on his back.

Now Shearer believes there can be no excuses going into the battle with former Newcastle coach Nigel Pearson’s newly promoted Foxes.

Shearer said: “Nobody can make any excuses.

“The simple fact is we haven’t been good enough.

“You can make whatever excuses you want.

“Injuries, too many games or confidence.

“Put all of that to one side, the simple fact of the matter is we just have not been good enough.

    “We haven’t been unlucky.

“We havent been ravaged by injuries.

“We haven’t been done by dodgy decisions.

“We just haven’t been good enough.

    “It’s simple.

“That’s the harsh reality of it.

“Things have to improve and they have to improve pretty quickly or we could find ourselves in a hole.”

Hang on, what about Shola leaving? That was a big blow. And er..............HBA leaving. That was a big blow too as contributed loads. He is one of the best players in the world, that would hurt any team. Then there is the weather. Its been unseasonably warm at various stages. I also heard a rumour that Carver lost his lucky teddy bear too. They've looked everywhere, its been very distracting.

Shearer really should get the facts before he goes telling the press we're not good enough. We're brilliant really. We have a great manager and great players. We will finish in the top 6. Well, we will if we find the teddy bear.

Shearer the player was magnificent, I would have been really impressed with him if he had of had the balls to stay on and try to bring the club back up from relegation.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but he did want the job, but Ashley wouldn't give it to him...?

That said, he didn't prove to be much of a manager for the 8 games he was in charge for...

Hardly blame Shearer for us going down. We were virtually dead and buried when he came and wasn't given the chance to get us up with his own squad of players.

Above is quite correct, Shearer was told he would be staying on by Mike Ashley, who then didn't speak to him for a week before informing him he would not be staying on. Shearer wanted to try and bring us back up. Who knows where we might be now if he had stayed on full time, better, worse?

He may as well give his opinion, everybody else has.
Not that it would register in the slightest with the indifferent prat Ashley.

Shearer would have made far more enemies in the dressing room in the Championship season, and the media spotlight would have been firmly on the club. Hughton was perfect for the role, just quietly got on with the job of winning games and got us back up at the first time of asking. With Shearer there would have been fireworks, and I can imagine him having quit or been sacked within 6 months and us stuck fighting for the playoffs.

What's the difference between Oscar Pistorios and NUFC?

One has a good defence and gets more shots on target!
