When someone asks you how many fingers you have what is the answer?

Most people would say ten.

The thumb is a specialised finger.

 

It has a metacarpal, proximal phalange and distal phalange. So do the other fingers. Only difference is the bone it is connected to is a specialized one, and the other fingers also have medial phalanges.

 

Are you going to post the pics of your cousin's phalange or what?.

You wouldn't say 10, whether you are naming the thumb as a finger or not!

 

The word 'finger' is not a medical term. I call the thumb a phalange, and I call the other fingers phalanges as well. In that sense, the thumb (in layman's terms) can be classed as a 'finger'.

 

Is there an easy 'rule of thumb' to remember all that?
