tbf it was kept quiet, got leaked, and coz the only hysteria would be if there was a threat to earth, like when they tell you a meteor just missed us by 200,000 miles, its good to know they have there eyes on us, if they said on the 10'o'clock news that they had just found e.t trying to phone home there would be anarchy
No there wouldn't. I don't know what you are basing that on, apart from bad SciFi movies. I would lay odds that the majority of people would be amazed and pleased, that we weren't alone.
It's Sc Fi writers fault mate, 99.9% of alien contact is hostile. Well apart from "My Favourite Martian" hahaha And to think they would travel billions of miles just to probe some redneck in America's arse just makes me chuckle.

See now I loved The Day of the Triffids. Wyndham new he had flaws in his baddies being slow moving plants, so added in the population being blind.
I'm watching 2012 right now on Channel 5, another movie about governments keeping the truth from the population. Where as if they had informed them more people could have saved themselves by having time to prepare.
