Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand makes retirement revelations

Rio Ferdinand reveals that he would have retired had Queens Park Rangers not given him a contract.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he would have retired from the game had Queens Park Rangers not come calling.

The ex-England international was released by the Red Devils at the end of last season after 12 years at Old Trafford.

During that period, Ferdinand established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world and won trophies galore.

The former Leeds United star clinched the Premier League six times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup twice and the Champions League on one occasion.

Last season Ferdinand struggled with injuries and did not play regularly, and was eventually let go by United. QPR came calling for the ex-West Ham United star, who signed a one-year contract with the London club.

Ferdinand has now revealed that had Rangers not made an offer to him, then he would have retired.

‘Yeah, that’s true’, he told Inside United when asked if he would have retired had a London club not come calling.

‘I was really keen to come back to London, it’s where I’m from and it’s where my family were keen to come back to after it became clear that I wouldn’t be staying at United.

‘It was only ever going to be London that I’d go to, as I wasn’t interested in going abroad or chasing a load of money. It all fell into place for me nicely’.

Ferdinand, though, has struggled to play well so far this season for QPR. Some will almost certainly suggest that it would have been better for him had he hung up his boots.

Should Rio Ferdinand have retired in the summer?

Rio's retirement tour is in full swing. Still, at least we'll get a nice chapter in his next book. No wonder he was prepared to take a wage cut to come here- he knows fully well that active footballers make more from their books than retired ones. Great business move

    Well, he ain't no fool.
It is not many times in life you can have your cake and eat it too.
Rio has retired but is still getting paid, not to mention the book.
When the season is over, please let us know what was the highlight of your first 12 months of retirement.

Judging by his performances to date he retired before we signed him, he'd be at home with a zimmer frame...

I am picking up a vibe here that Rio is not exactly doing the business for you lot...

I was at the Hull game and thought he looked okay, though Caulker is a player who never impressed me playing for Cardiff..

Now that you point it out..I see where you're coming from....if memory serves me right Chessie gave him a bit of a body swerve at the corner, arched his back around the big fella and headed it in....Other than that I thought he looked okay. .That said we hardly pressed you all game...

How is Caulker doing? Because if ever there was a player who could talk a good game it was him.. When Hull played Cardiff last year at theres, he resembled a dummy at Mad Tuss..

Better than Ferdinand - which doesn't say much.

He's been okay IMO. Good and bad. Practically the whole team have been pretty sh*t though mate so its hard to single out anyone who's been playing well.

Long season ahead then!!...Wish I could say that Rangers will get out of it..but looks tricky.. Getting stuffed four in away games can't help and West Ham looked like Hull in 09...Piss poor.
