I've got lots of cousins, mother was a catholic and had 7 sisters who all have kids. The cousin in question is on my dads side, and was not up the duff. Gambol, is it an index finger you lost? If you're to lose any finger, that's the best one to lose. You can do every function without that one. Pinkie is surprisingly the worst to lose.
Aye, index finger. Middle and ring fingers re-attached. I would think the thumb would be worst to lose.
Yeah that's a given, without a thumb we would be ****ed, literally. Imagine trying to fight off would-be rapists without two of the best moves; the thumb eye gouge and the fishhook.
Its as bad as the common social faux pas of referring to a **** as a " five knuckle shuffle ". Five knuckles my arse, so to speak.
When someone asks you how many fingers you have what is the answer? Most people would say ten. The thumb is a specialised finger.
It has a metacarpal, proximal phalange and distal phalange. So do the other fingers. Only difference is the bone it is connected to is a specialized one, and the other fingers also have medial phalanges.

The word 'finger' is not a medical term. I call the thumb a phalange, and I call the other fingers phalanges as well. In that sense, the thumb (in layman's terms) can be classed as a 'finger'.
