Toilet leak!! Oh dear. Isn't it always the way when you have a list of things that need doing that something else happens in an older house :)

I knew a guy who did the bereavement door knocking thing for the army. I'd rather do front line IED disposal than that.

I also know a couple of people who are off to deal with ebola (in the news yesterday). I'll probably take the IED's again.

Gosh, whatever I do is the wrong isn't it? If I mention it, I'm being self-indulgent, if I don't mention it I'm being self-indulgent. But fine. I did speak to her and found out her name, I didn't pursue anything as it became apparent that she is already dating someone else (not sure if they're officially going out yet, but either way, not worth pursuing)

Well, she seemed nice but I didn't think there was much point wasting my time and energy on someone who's clearly interested in someone else already.

And official, I guess when you become boyfriend and girlfriend rather than just two single people on a date together, if you catch my drift.

mmmm .... modern society strikes again.

Not picking on you PL, but that sentence is so typical of today's convenience society. Sometimes in live time and energy needs to be "wasted" to get things or make things happen.

I think I am an old fart.

Nope. No harm in trying, what's the worse that can happen? She could say no but then you just move on. I have done it plenty of times, it's just about having the confidence to talk to a girl.

Hi PL. Was looking at Youtube videos last night on best techniques of how to reflow solder on a PS3 motherboard [like you do], when lo-and-behold, I stumble across this: The End of the Beginning - David Mitchell
It's not a judgement on you, it's not to take the piss. It's to show that there is always someone. This true story shows that it happens to anybody at random. I listened to it all. Very uplifting.

Thanks for posting that piece from David Mitchell, TSS. I knew the outline of his life that he had waited years to be with Victoria Cohen, but it was written so beautifully.

That's OK, Fran. Let's hope the right person comes along to listen to it too before it disappears behind pages of other stuff. :)

No, whatever you do is only wrong if you adopt a purely inward facing focus. Which you're doing (and which forms a large part of the issue).

Now, aside from that good, you talked to her, you found some stuff out, you moved forward in a lot of ways. Progress.

Well, pinched nerve in the back or not, I can be productive, it seems.

Did I mention I had been given a Sony PS3 to fix..? It had the YLOD and blinking Red [Google that]. Basically, it was buggered due to poor Sony quality control, not overuse and abuse. The thermal paste hadn't even got hard on the chips, but was of extremely poor quality and unevenly applied. I'm with a few of the people on the Net who reckon Sony have very much fallen from grace. There are only a couple or three true stand out products they've ever made, one definitely being the Sony Trinitron tube for small TVs, which was an obvious step ahead in performance at the time, but everyone caught up and overtook them eventually. Anyway, I digress.

The bastard PS3 now works. I had to take the thing apart twice because it had two quality faults, not one. The CPU and GPU soldered connections had to be re-flowed, and you only get one real good go at that, if my information is correct. Plus, the bluray connector had never been connected properly, so was a bit hit and miss. No wonder they hardly ever used it. There was almost zero dust in the thing, and it is essentially brand new. Sony want something like £150 for a repair that they will only guarantee for 3 months. Others will do exactly the same for £50. I've done it for kicks and giggles and learning. Luckily, the owner said if I destroyed it then so be it, so I had carte blanche. Made me forget about the pain in my back too.

Now onto an Acer Aspire 7535 laptop. I fear this one might be beyond my efforts to fix it. It's an Acer, so I won't get my hopes up. If ever there was a manufacturer to avoid [apart from a host of others] it's Acer. Yes, I know you're happy with yours - wait a while longer. :)

This one doesn't boot up or get anywhere near it. Apparently, they suffer from this after a year or more. Figures..! Acer's sum total response appears to be buy another, because this doesn't happen to Acer laptops. Err, yeah. So all those thousands of owners are dreaming their computers don't start up, are they..? <doh>
