From the point of view of a cyclist who drives I think like most motorists you are all deluded to think that its unfair to even have rules on roads. I see it day in day out of motorist who are short tempered, impatient, flouting rules and regulations whilst in charge of a couple of tons of metal. I am constantly squeezed into the kerb area by cars who are behind me and start to crawl past as they can't wait. Road rage is real and not just happens to someone else, everyone wants their 'bit' of road and want to get where they want to be as fast as they cane and f**k everyone else. I see it when sat on a bus and when coming up to traffic likes a car will cut in front at the last minute for what? And even though there are laws about using mobiles in cars I'm afraid that like speeding motorists drivers ignore every law made as they tap away at their texting. I could also say about the woman I saw with a dog on the steering wheel as she drove along or the guy with a news paper spread across his steering wheel as he drove, but like I say this is from the point of a cyclist and I may also add a qualified motor cycle rider and qualified car driver of many years standing.

There are various arguments about the behaviour of cyclist and I have no time for those who flout the rules of the roads for them either, but there will only be one winner in a collision between car and cycle. I have yet to know of a car, or van or whatever coming off worse after an accident with a cyclist. Then this is the misconception of 'road tax' there is no such thing roads are paid for out of general taxation and I can say this potholes are vary rarely caused by cyclists using the roads. It will only get worse as each generation that becomes eligible to drive will want their own car, space for parking and for getting to where they want to be without any hindrance whatsoever and our roads are just about chocker block as it is at peak times. Road building, especially around the Hull area at least, is at a stand still but the purchase of cars is not so I can only say that even though all these cameras and other restrictions irk you, traffic jams will irk you even more as more people pour on to our congested roads.

There have to have been a number of incidents at a location before a camera can be placed there

You do know most motor vehicles don't have speed limiters right?
So you have to go from staring at the road to staring at your speedo..........really safe that isn't it.

the two speeds OLM brings up arn't particularly excessive by any stretch and i totally agree on many roads away from urban areas , the limit is too low .
However , (and im talking in urban areas here) there has to be a point where the camera is triggered and its pretty conclusive at these lower speeds 4 mph can really make a massive difference to a pedestrians chances .

The maths also make me furious when it comes to speeding in built up areas .

If you are able to get to Tesco 10% quicker , seriously how many seconds of your precious life have you saved ?

When we get in our cars we all turn into some armour plated cyborg of the future , cocooned from the universe and goverened only by time itself .

how would we behave if each steering wheel has a three inch spike in the centre of it ?

You have a legal right in those cases to request a calibration test & tickets have been cancelled for that reason, had he contested it in court he would have won

Indeed although speed doesn't need to be the cause which it damn well should have to be.
An example is that a camera got the green light once and one of those 3 incidents that was used was cause some fool jumped of a bridge.

No in my car it's controlled from the steering wheel just drop to speed press the button, but I can see the speedo out of the corner of my eye at most times

He was told he could go to court and contest it, but would probably be wasting his time, so he just a speed awareness course instead.

I once got nicked for speeding by two coppers in a plain car on the M1 with no speed recording equipment at all. Their case was based on their word only, so I went to court and contested it(in bloody Luton) and I still got done, it's very difficult to get off once these things they've been issued.

I'm not a fan of speed cameras, but I think people should obey the limits that are there.

I would personally prefer more coppers in cars as cameras don't catch drink/drug/dangerous/uninsured/no mot drivers.

I believe where cameras are in use then we should use average speed cameras rather than vans, as the vans can cause sudden braking

In your mates case he would have won, I used to go out with someone who worked in that dept of the local authority in Humberside days & it regularly happened, but they won't advise people to do it as it takes them time & money to go to court with it

With the copper's 2 vs 1 so they will usually win, however they don't usually stop you much below 90

I should probably clarify, that when I say I think the speed limit is too low, I'm only talking about on motorways.

With regard to other areas, the speed limits are fair enough, as long as they use a little common sense when applying them. Hiding behind a bend and nicking people for being 1mph over what's allowed is excessive and simply causes resentment, particularly when just four offences in three years sees you banned from driving.

I'm not going to defend someone who has been caught speeding, we all know the laws of the road and ignorance of the limit is no defence. However, I do get pissed off with the methods involved and the amount of resources poured into this money raising exercise in the name of road safety.

People should also remember that you cannot have a speed awareness course if you already have points on your licence, you will automatically get points & a fine even at 34 in a 30

You can, I already had six points when I did mine, you just can't do more than one every three years(otherwise I could have done one for both my recent offences).

Also, if you have an advanced driving licence, you aren't eligible for a speed awareness course.

Ouch, serial offender then, my sympathy has just gone (speeding points are only valid for 3 years as active endorsements although you cannot have them removed from your licence for 4)

Once is a mistake, twice careless but more than that plain stupid

The six I had were for a single offence, doing 90 something in Scotland(on the way back from the Hearts pre-season), those jocks don't like us English, they hammered me in my absence.

It was rather an occupational hazard though, I spent fifteen years living in the East Riding, but working in London, doing between 50-70,000 miles a year.
