That's 20% over the limit, that's why you were stopped, that's the rule they normally worked to, though you were unlucky, as they don't normally bother unless you're doing about 90.

Speeding isn't the problem, driving too fast for the conditions is.

No, I got nicked about 10 years ago doing 84 and I've never done it since. Why did you think it was 'just'? And that's the point, I learned my lesson.

So it's not really funny is it?

No, I'm saying if you break the speed limit and get fined for it, at least have the good grace not to cry about it.

Erm... you still did it though, how does the fact it happened 10 years ago (supposedly) mean it is different than one that happened this year?

Some years ago on my bike around the manchester M62 - M6 area the flow of traffic was 80 to 85 mph including the police patrol car. This would have been 6 or 7 pm. no harm done.

A few day later my neighbour commited the heinous crime of riding at 85mph on the empty M18 at 3 am resulting in a fine and 3 points.

It was funny that you were ranting at someone about not exceeding the limit when you've obviously done so yourself, didn't you know it was dangerous to drive at excess speed in the wet ten years ago?

Dutch has it right, motorway speed limits are too low, it's not the limits that are the problem, it's ignoring the conditions that cause the problems.

Yes I have. The difference between 30 and 40 is also startling. Glad to see you appreciate this.

These cameras have NOTHING to do with road safety. If they were there wouldn't be unmarked bikes out to catch motorcyclists. Sending someone a letter three days later informing them they were "dangerous" does not stop that "dangerous" behaviour.
Focusing on speed allows other types of potentially dangerous driving, such as drunk, uninsured or dangerous driving, to go unchecked.

So you think it's reasonable to nick someone for doing 33 in a 30, fair enough, where would you draw the line then?

Presumably you'd think 31 in 30 would also warrant a £100 fine and 3 points?

Speeds limits have to be wrong more often than they're right. 20mph is too fast outside of a school at 15:00 term time. 30mph is too fast in snow, ice, fog etc. At 03:00 70mph is dangerously slow on an empty motorway.

    Most collisions don't involve speeding.

So you were aware of it and still got caught? <laugh>

I'm filing your 81mph comment away with the ever growing list of made up facts. No, not everyone speeds on a motorway. If you slowed down a bit you might notice that.

I was ranting because they should know better. I do know better now, I was wrong and I learned from it. From your comments it seems you have been caught yet instead of learning you just blame the existing law.

Saw a little while ago in the Hull Daily Mail plans / proposal to make the city center a 20mph zone due to the number of pedestrian injuries, mainly around the bus station. Ferensway at 3 am doing 20mph, i can see you all sticking to that limit. not

They'd need new equipment to do that, they can't prosecute anyone speeding by less than 10% due to the margin of error associated with the cameras used.

I think the law is wrong, it makes no sense, it assumes all cars are the same, when obviously they're not.

My son can drive his classic sports car at 70mph on the M1, I could drive mine at twice that and still stop more quickly than he could.

The limit in France and Italy is 81mph and in Ireland, Spain and Portugal it's 75mph and in Germany there is no speed limit at all on many motorways.

It was supposed to be raised to 80mph here a year ago, on the basis that over 50% of the population ignored it anyway, but I don't know what happened to that legislation, they probably realised how much money it would cost them if they stopped nicking people.
