Just looked at Garth Crooks's team of the week and both Hendo and Lallana are in it.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29499082

However, what caught my eye was that Garth Crooks made an interesting comparison. He compared our Jordan to Ian Callaghan. Here's what he said:

Obviously, Cally was a little before my time but -- from what I've seen in old reports and clips from the 70's -- it seems he was a similar type of player, in that he covered every blade of grass on the pitch, and trained as hard as he played. Obviously, with Ian being around 5'7" and Hendo pushing 6', they aren't similar in build but are they footballing kindred spirits?

Would any of the older members of the forum agree with this comparison? Perhaps you could explain the similarities and differences between Jordan and Ian's games?

Also, could you share your recollections of the LFC great that was Toxteth's Ian Callaghan: still the most capped LFC player ever! <ok>

Perhaps a response to the title, rather than the content of the OP?

he has similar attitude on the pitch and always gives his best, but thats where the similarities for me stop.

hendo joined a team at the top, calaghan was part of this club for 18yrs and came up through the leagues and would have stayed and given his all even if we had got relegated again, i dont see that in hendo, not local for one, and he would have been off like most footballers now days as its all about number one now days and ridiculous wages they get.

so even though i know the thread was done with good intentions, i always find it a bit of an insult to compare any current player to those greats of the past.

he may have the same attitude on the pitch but that's where the comparison for now stops.

see if he is still here if/when we go through another ****ey patch.

    hmmmm...........

obviosuly I am too young to know and i suspect garth hasn't a goo either.

I would say henderson is a "busy" player who was freed v west brom and looked instantly better for it. It will be interesting to see if rodgers sticks with that.

Now... comparisons... I fee ray houghton would actually be another possible comparision for business and another though very different position is kuyt.

those at least I can say fit the comparision route.

I'm not sure hendo will sustain his fitness as long as callaghan but its different times.

Wouldn't pay too much attention to Crooks, he's an idiot and his team of the week is always a joke. Pick players because they score a goal even if they've been **** the rest of the match. Take this weeks, Yaya picked cause he scored but could barely pass the ball the rest of the game, Hazard rips Arsenal a new one, scores and has an all round brilliant game, not picked.

It is true that Crooks is an idiot. Callaghan is way before my time. But Crooks is an idiot. His team of the week always has some thing dumb about it.

bbc prob love that cos it gets people talking but like lawro if it keeps on the same way for years people switch off. I never look at bbc website any more bar rumors and use sky phone apps for live updates.

I stopped looking at games on bbc live update as all the updates were obviously programmed responses. yellow card for bad foul etc etc.. no richness to detail anymore and mccunty and croork and such are just dull.

  9. It bugs me whenever I see a "X is the new Y" type comment. Hendo is the new, old and current Hendo, no one else!

The only true similarity between Cally and Henderson is that both try and give you all they have as consistently as possible. After that their roles within the side were very different. Cally had no true defensive responsibilities. His job was to play wide and stay wide but starting further back than Thompson on the other wing.

But as has been said already, Cally was Scouse and his blood flowed true RED, that's yet to be proved with Henderson.

No similarity whatsoever except for them both giving their all for the team.

This bit is completely wrong :

At a similar age, Cally was outscoring Henderson! He scored both goals in the Anfield derby in 1963 which we won 2-1 to a rapturous round of 'It's Cally, it's Cally, it's Cally ....'

    I agree with this, TBH.

I just used Crooks' comment so we could discuss our new deputy (vice) captain and a true Liverpool legend.

I did a bit of reading about Callaghan and (apparently!) he was the only person Shanks told to calm down in training. I imagine Henderson to be cut from the same cloth in that respect.

Garth is talking with it out, as ever.

This is how he starts his bit on Lallalalalana in the same article:
Lalla has only started a handful of games because of injury. His first goal could have been a bit quicker, he could have hit the ground running and made an immediate impact, but Crooks makes it sound like he's doing a Crouch.

Obvious very different players and not as good as he was... but Henderson looks to be our long-term Gerrard replacement.

Minus fair free kicks, great penalties, and atrocious corners.

Good comparison. I've often used the comparison with McDermott, in terms of all the flicks and suchlike, but continuous purposeful running was key to the game of all three, and Hendo just gets better and better. Not that I want to get rid of Gerrard prematurely (still a revelation in that head of the diamond role in the final 20 mins last Saturday, wasn't he?), but I think he'll flourish more when Gerrard steps down.

Cally was a winger for Liverpool and England in the 60's. he switched to a dynamic, Alan Ball-type midfielder very successfully in the early 70's when Shanks was re-building the team after the 70 cup defeat at Watford. Thenceforth he scored less goals than when he was an old-fashioned winger, but became a lot more influential in play.

Think he only ever got booked once, which is astonishing in that role, when you think of it, but when e ruled Europe many, many astute continental coaches identified him as the midfield general who controlled Liverpool's game. More than just a runner indeed, and a very fine mantle for Hendo to strive for.

Cally was a true legend and always will be. I like and rate Hendo, but he's got a **** of a long way to go before he's mentioned in the same breath at Ian Callaghan <ok>

That's it in a nut shell - he isn't like the Cally I remember but could be if he sticks around and continues the great work he's started.
