Newcastle target Swans star Newcastle are reportedly considering a £7million swoop for Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis after missing out on him in the summer. Newcastle target Swans star The France striker only made the move to the Liberty Stadium in June after opting to leave Lyon, with Newcastle said to have been in the running for his signature. Speculation indicated the Toon had agreed deal with the 29-year-old, only for talks to break down when Newcastle refused to meet his wage demands. However, reports have now emerged suggesting the Magpies could renew their interest in Gomis after learning he has a £7million release clause in his contract with Swansea. Gomis is behind Wilfried Bony in manager Garry Monk's pecking order and has yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League, but is unlikely to be already considering his options just months into a four-year contract.
I reckon his buy out clause will reflect what we paid him as a signing on fee....I wonder if it's true that the clause is around £7m? I reckon that a clause of around £7m might indicate that we paid him £5-6m up front....just a hunch.
From what I have seen so far .... yes. He is 29 and not getting any younger or faster. He does not have the same tools as Bony - in fact a distant second in the Bony role. We don't seem to adapt as a team to his optimal style and service when he comes on - I'm not sure whether this is a Monk thing or a team thing. In other words, he is not a good fit for us. We can perhaps spend that money on somebody younger that would be a better fit for us. I don't like the concept of a player having to adapt to the Prem .... blah, blah, blah, etc. Frankly, adaptation time costs money, there is opportunity cost if nothing else, and at this level when we spend big money (for us) on players they need to come in, fit well, and perform. However, having said that, there needs to be a replacement available. We don't have anybody I know of on staff that could step in at this point in time, so we would have to acquire the replacement.
I know it's early doors and he could become a very good striker, but if the transfer window opened tomorrow I'd drive him to Newcastle myself for 7 million.
You might dislike the concept of players adapting to the Prem YJ but it's a reality. One word - Bony. Shame imo because I think Gomis brings something to the table but it wouldn't break my heart if he left though I'd be worried about only having Emnes and Donnelly as replacements for Bony when the African Cup comes around. Just our luck he'll sign for a rival and bang in 20 goals.
Were caught between a pillow and a soft place terror , either Bony or Gomis will leave in the transfer window with Emnes as back up to who is left , and money in the bank.
I think Bony had the tools but not the fitness - for whatever reason. Once corrected he was fine. Surely Gomis doesn't suffer from a fitness problem - not under Monk?
Judging by the lethargic display by those on the pitch on Saturday Yankee I'm beginning to wonder about our much talked about fitness regime. No offence but I really don't understand your mentality when it comes to money ,Roof. It's all very well selling players at a profit but unless you replace them with equal or better I'm afraid money in the bank can actually buy you relegation. Our Club is solvent we don't need the money right now. What is important is remaining a Premier League outfit.
Bony and Emnes are all we need if Gomis leaves . Its not just a football team , its a business in the Premier. Gomis was brought in in case Bony left , Bony didnt go , Gomis is expendable imo.
Pros - He's on huge wages, these would be freed up (at least £50k a week = £1m saved between Jan and May) - He's 29 and we are committed to paying those wages for 4 years....we could buy someone younger and cheaper as back-up in January - We make a small profit after only 4 months of (I'm guessing) £1m-£3m - Some have a question mark over whether his style fits with us....could we find someone who fits in better Cons - With Bony departing for a month or so in January we would be potentially left with only Emnes, Donnelly and Barrow as back up. - If we are to replace Gomis in January it is often said that January is the worst time to purchase - Gomis, although an expensive risk (as I pointed out at the time), does show signs of good ability....he might start banging them in if he has a run of games. - If we kept him and sold Bony next summer for a nice fat profit (I get the impression that's what Bony wants) we would have the Bony replacement bedded in already and we would only need to purchase a good young striker to compete....we'd probably bank most of the Bony money in these circumstances. - We would be supplying a potential relegation rival with a top striker who could score the goals that would see Newcastle safe - Any potential replacement signed in January would probably need some time to get up to speed with his new team mates. - Beyond January, what if Bony comes back from Africa injured?
See, that is what comes from just have a quick look and not reading properly. fair play I will tak a d for that one.
Do not agree with this, and I think Emnes has proved himself above Gomis so far, every time he comes on the pitch we get a goal or penalty, and that from his 15 minutes as a sub, what would we get if he started games? Many are underestimating Emnes just because he came from the Championship and his contract fee was low..................... I would not sell Gomis, because Bony clearly has itchy feet, and wants a big club move, so I'd keep Gomis as his time will come.
emms puts in a better display when ever he comes on than both bony and gomis, Bony especially has been poor and i hope he goes off our wage bill if he dont shape up soon...
