Cracking intermediate chase at Sir Barney's favourite racetrack Newton Abbot on Friday. Amongst the entries are Uxizandre, Taquin de Seul, Wonderful Charm and Double Ross. Nice to see some of the better jumpers reappear. The only unfortunate omission to the entries is that Sir Barney's main man Hendo has none in it!

Am the only one who views old movies even when one knows the outcome?

All The President's is so gripping I can't turn in until it's over....

...way before my time but I feel a sequel brewing involving the beastly Bush "dynasty"...

This movie ticks all the boxes re tension, subterfuge grande, acting, screenplay and the low cut blouses off the old Sec's.

Enough for a lie in,cancel my Burrito and cottaging lunch hour...thats some sacrifice for a gloryholer like me!

Have the Taghrooda fans come up 'owt original re her comprehensive defeat ...a slow mare is a slow mare as we say in Barakaldo..

Yep, wonderful race and indeed card at God’s own racecourse on Friday. It’s their last meet of the year and Newton Abbot are certainly going out in style with over £90k in the old prizepot.

That intermediate chase looks a corker and also engaged is Pip Hobbs’ Colour Squadron. Amazing to think he’s won over £70k in races over the big ‘uns but is still a maiden over fences! Surely, he’ll break his duck sometime this term.

Surprising that Mr Henderson hasn’t got a runner in the race or indeed at the fixture (Paul Henderson has but not THE Mr Henderson).

Today is the 2nd anniversary of one of the great, and I so mean great, training performances of our age. Mr Henderson debuted Lieutenant Miller, on the level, not in some weak maiden race but in the £10,100 Phil Bull Trophy ‘oooooooooooooop’ at Ponty. Racing against animals rated in the 100’s the former favourite trainer and the forum’s second favourite Lieutenant (after Colombo) duly did the business at 11/1. Oh happy, happy days!

I’m sure correspondents would struggle to think of a better training performance since then.

Russian Heroine @ 12/1 Joe Coral 2:40 Ponty

Today's key stat

Since the start of 2013, Sir Michael Stoute handicappers at Pontefract have finished 1141314, showing a profit of £8.12 to a £1 stake. He has Russian Heroine in the 2.40 there.
Courtesy of Raceform Interactive

Jockey Graham Gibbons 50% (1 from 2) for the Sir Michael Stoute barn over the past 5 years, who are in excellent form and have a 20% (7 from 35) strike rate at the track over the same period.

Very competitive race but this horse has some decent form and off a mark of 71 must go close to winning this race ? No way she is a 12/1 shot in my book, going to have a Max Pony E/W Punt

Big drifter this morning 6/1 out to 12/1, can't understand this??????, might be change of going??? but she ran 2nd on Good to Soft on penultimate start.

Betting on Windsor maidens in October is probably the quick way to the poorhouse, but I can't let Harbour Patrol, 2.20, go unbacked at around 5/2 for the Hannon and Hughes combo. Plenty of money for this Rocky Rider, as you'd expect for £400,000 purchase, by Galileo out of a Darshaan mare, but he could be one for next year over further, and was well beaten on his debut at Haydock. The selection has shown steady improvement with each of his three runs so far, and went close in a decent Newbury Maiden on soft over 7f last time.

I used to so enjoy watching him shuffling round the parade ring, huge cigar in one hand & TIMEFORM racecard in t'other, relentlessly scrutinizing the horses.

Phil Bulls ten commandments

1. Seek where thou wilt for winners, but bet only when thou seest value; deliver thyself from the temptation to bet in every race.

2. Put not thy faith in luck, nor the law of averages, nor thy trust in staking systems, for these are delusions.

3.Let thy stake be related to the depths of thy pockets and to what thou regardest as the true chance of the horse; that which hath the greater chance deserveth the greater stake.

4. Thou shalt not bet each way in big fields, unless thou art well satisfied as to the value of the place bet.

5. Bet with bookmakers or Tote according to thy judgement: thus shalt thou endeavour to get the best of both worlds.

6. Thou shalt not bet ante-post except upon horses that are known to be definite runners.

7. Beware the man who would sell thee a system; if thou knowest a profitable one, preserve it to thyself in silence.

8. Double and treble if thou must; but bet not upon objections for thou hast not the evidence and the stewards know not what they do. <laugh>

9. Let thy betting be informed by wisdom and diligence, and tempered by patience and caution, and leavened but a little with boldness.

10. Let thy bets be well within thy means: he that maketh his fortune in a week loseth his ducats in a day. Here endeth the lesson!

Attivo, you're right to be perplexed about the market in that 2.40 nursery at Ponte, and you might guess that Something's Going On.

Matt Tester, the BHA 2yo handicapper, is so good at his job that I always take notice when a nursery market goes inexplicably haywire, because it suggests that someone believes Tester's made a (very, very rare) rick. In this case, the someone might be Karl Burke, whose ARTHUR MARTINLEAKE has zipped in from 10-1 on the tissue to a current best of about 3-1. This ran in that very valuable sales race at York after winning a C5 maiden at Yarmouth, following which it got rated at 79, then was fairly well backed when beaten from a bad draw at Chester. Down to 77 today, well-drawn, and you might think that Burke sees this as a soft race for a useful horse.

Maybe not a race to get drawn into heavily, but I intend to back Arthur, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

(A few echoes of the past in the names here, too. Arthur Martin Leake, if I remember rightly, was the first soldier ever to win a bar to the VC, and I assume that Russian Heroine is a nod to Russian Hero, the Grand National winner of 1949. It's absolutely true that the older you get, the more boring your conversation is).
