If you mean team, as opposed to club, then football (of sorts) was first played in the late middle ages. A form of it may have been played by the Scottish royals in the 15th Century.

No. What I'm looking for is the first verifiable football club - they are neither the oldest ever nor now existing. And they pre-date Notts County by a good few years...

The oldest existing football club is Cambridge University AFC. The first actually described as a 'club' and now no longer existing was the football club of Edinburgh (1820's - 30's)- although the rules were very different to modern football.

The Foot-Ball club of Edinburgh is the one cologne, They were formed in 1824 in the Dalry area of Edinburgh with the express aim of raising money for the poor of the area through playing exhibition games. Last heard of in 1841, no-one really knows what happened to them after that - although they were 'resurrected' in 2007 & play in the Premier division of the Edinburgh Sunday League.

    Over to you...

A good try Dave. Nine Elms Lane station was closed to passenger transport in 1848 and finally demolished in the 1960's. The one I am thinking of is still used as a station. A clue - many football fans will have disembarked there over the years.
