Dredd 2012 Review:

Story:
The movie starts with the scenes of what’s now the present world, a over populated city named Mega City 1, with a huge population living in the ruins of the old city and some new mega structures, the city gets a lot of crime cases only some are investigated, the enforcers are the men and women of the department of Justice who are authorized to Judge criminals and execute them. Judge Dredd is one of the judges in the city, the initial scenes show him following 3 criminals who are in a car on his bike, during the chase Dredd shoots the car, causing an accident, two criminals die on spot & the third one runs to a near by apartment, Dredd follows him where the criminal takes a female hostage, Dredd kills the criminal with a white phosphorus bullet, Next a ruthless female drug lord named Madeline Madrigal A.k.a Mama is shown taking a bath in a bath tub, when she comes out her men has captured 3 rouge drug dealers, Kay 1 of Mama’s men tell her what to do with them, Mama tells them to throw them from the top after injecting them with Slo Mo a designer drug that slows down brain functions which slow down time for the person who takes the drug, the 3 rouge drug dealers are thrown off the top floor, they fall to death, back in the HQ, Dredd is told by his superior to evaluate a rookie trainee named Cassandra Anderson, who also happens to be a very powerful psychic, initially Dredd thinks if she has failed to pass the tests she is not fit for duty but when Anderson shows her psychic abilities Dredd decides to take her for evaluation, they investigate the deaths of 3 rouge drug dealers, during their investigation they get the info about a 200 storied slum tower named “Peach Trees“, when they go to investigate there, they arrest kay when Anderson uses her psychic powers she comes to know that Kay was involved in the death of those 3 rouge drug dealers, Dredd decides to arrest him and take him for interrogation. When a computer expert who works for mama sees that kay is arrested by Dredd he informs Mama, fearing that Kay upon interrogation would reveal the secret that mama wants to hide, she sends her men to the control room of the building, mama’s men kill the operators in the control room & mama’s hacker hacks into the buildings control system, the hacker initiates a lockdown of the building using its blast shields, when the town authority asks the buildings operators about this mama’s hacker tell them that it’s a security test. Now both the judges with Kay are locked inside the building.
Mama makes an announcement to all the building residents that there are 2 judges in the building & wants her dead, the rest of the non fighter residents should remain indoors until everything is resolved. Dredd & Anderson fight their way through lot of thugs, they take shelter in a room upon being cornered which belonged to the man who Anderson killed just moments ago, Anderson says that taking Kay with them will be dangerous for them, Dredd asks Anderson whether she wants to let him go, Anderson takes Kay with them, & leaves the room, killing more thugs the judges are running low on ammo, while mama hacker is trying to track them, the judges cannot communicate outside coz all the communication are blocked, mama’s hacker finally tracks them down, The hacker seals the judges in a section with metal barricades, but when mama’s men don’t attack the judges for some time, Dredd feels something is wrong, Dredd succeeds in getting out of the barricade, Dredd asks Anderson to stay behind telling her whatever happens don’t get taken alive, then Dredd goes alone further, when Dredd reaches a balcony he sees mama & her men are preparing 3 Vulcan cannons on the other side balcony, as Dredd runs for cover mama’s men begin firing, the powerful Vulcan cannon rips through walls & a lot of residents are killed, Dredd & Anderson in an attempt the escape the range of Vulcan cannons jump out of a section where they land on an extension of the building, finding their comms are back, dredd call for backup, but knowing that mama’s men will come looking for them & they cannot defend themselves in that place they go in again, mama sends Caleb along with some other thugs to make sure that the judges are dead, but Dredd kills all the thugs & throws Caleb down from the balcony in mama‘s view, Dredd figures that mama is desperate to keep Kay from interrogation, when Dredd beats up Kay for information he does not says anything, Anderson uses her Psychic ability to find out that Peach Tress is the base of manufacturing of Slo Mo, if this location is compromised then the Slo Mo drug will disappear from the city, Anderson wants to wait till backup arrives but Dredd wants to continue to the top floor to get to mama, Anderson & Dredd tries to tap in to the buildings announcement system, at this time two armed teenagers show up, Dredd shoots them with not lethal electro bullets, but kay overpowers Anderson & gets inside a lift taking her hostage, Kay takes Anderson to the top floor which is the base of mama, when Anderson is dragged into her layer kay asks mama what to do with her, mama tells that she should not raped or tortured just shot in the head & heart, she says she wants this to look like just another raid gone wrong where the judges end up dead, at this time two judges Guthrie and Volt reaches Peach Trees responding to Dredd’s call for backup, but mama hacker stops them from entering the building saying that there is something wrong with the software of the buildings security system, Dredd makes a announcement via the announcement system of the building telling that anyone who helps mama will be treated as a criminals too, mama’s hacker locates the area from where Dredd is making the announcement & sends some of her men to kill him, but Dredd ambushes the team & kills them with one Air Blast Incendiary Round, mama is not running out of men, she then calls some corrupt Judges for assistance, the corrupt judges arrive, they get into the building after relieving the 2 good judges, they meet up with mama, mama offers them a million dollars, the 2 male corrupt judges go to hunt Dredd, while the female corrupt judge go to kill Anderson who is captive, but when Kay picks up Anderson’s firearm which is coded to her DNA kay’s arm blows off coz of the security system of the weapon, Anderson frees herself & kills Kay, & escapes, later she kills the female judge when she discovers her plan using her psychic ability, Dredd reaches the section where workers produces Slo Mo, the corrupt judge confronts Dredd but when his cover is blown he gets killed, Dredd kills another corrupt judge but runs out of ammo, in a fight between the last Corrupt Juge & Dredd, Dredd is injured just as the final corrupt judge is about to kill him Anderson kills the corrupt Judge. With all the corrupt judges dead & after Dredd & Anderson refill their ammo from the dead judges, they make their way up, they capture the hacker working for mama, & get the code to mama’s layer, when Dredd reaches mama she tells him that this entire building is rigged with explosives & she has a device on her arm which measures her pulse if she dies the building blows, Dredd & Anderson kill all the remaining thugs, but Anderson is injured, Dredd says to mama that the signal of her arm device will not reach the explosives from the ground floor coz that 200 storied down, Dredd injects mama with Slo mo & throws her down, mama dies,
In the end Anderson leaves saying that she has failed the evaluation coz she lost her firearm during a operation, but when the superior asks Dredd about her evaluation, Dredd says she has passed.

Well the movie has the same base story as “The Raid Redemption”, locked in a tower the only way is through everyone, the movie has some firefights but nothing really great except from the scene where Dredd kills a whole bunch of thugs with a single air bust Incendiary round, the creative aspects are nice but not really great, Karl Urban never takes off his helmet would have been nice if he would do that, mama does not really comes out as a villain as she should be, she is more like a criminal who does not wants the judge problem, she tries to hide her operation, would be better if she would go all out, challenging the Law, the movie does slow down from time to time, with scenes that could have be avoided, since the whole movie is about surviving a tower, it does not really have much to offer, the slo mo scenes are nice to see but there are not many, some of the lines like “Mama is not the Law, I am the Law” are nice, the acting is okay, the direction is okay, nothing fancy, the movie has some gore & violence but that’s coz Judge Dredd universe is like that, Dredd’s character is projected rightly, this movie lacks action, & is very limited in one sense, you can watch this once & you will get slightly entertained,, I will give it 3.2/10

Gravity 2013 Review:
Story:
The movie starts with the scenes of astronauts on board a Explorer Space Shuttle servicing the Hubble Space Telescope, Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is servicing the Hubble, while Mission Commander Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) & another Astronaut are doing a space walk along with Stone, Soon Mission control in Houston warns the team about the incident of a Russian missile strike on a damaged Russian satellite, which has caused a chain reaction in space destroying other satellites & creating a storm of Debris in space, Mission Control aborts the service mission of Hubble & commands the team to get to safety, they are ordered to get into their shuttle, Detach Hubble & start earth reentry procedures, Matt detaches Hubble from their Space Shuttle but Dr Ryan was still working on the Hubble, after asking for permission to get Ryan from Mission Control Matt goes to get Ryan inside, but they are too late, a storm of Debris hit’s the team & their space shuttle, the shuttle & Hubble both take massive damage, Ryan loses her safety harness & is thrown into space, with nothing to hold her, Ryan drifts into open space, she lose contact with mission control, she gets really scared spinning out of control into open space, away from her shuttle, after a while she regains communication, with mission control, Ryan finds out that her Oxygen supply is running low, she begins to panic, but mission control advice her to keep calm as she is burning oxygen in a panic reaction, just as it seems that she will be lost in space Matt who has a space Maneuvering Unit, comes there & grabs Ryan, after securing her with a safety cable both Ryan & Matt go back to their shuttle using the Space Maneuvering Unit Matt has in his suit, they find out that their Space Shuttle is totally destroyed & all the crew inside is also dead as the pressurized containment inside the Shuttle was destroyed, they also find the third astronaut who was with them during the space walk, he is dead too coz the debris has destroyed his helmet going through his face, with their space shuttle destroyed which is now being pulled back towards earth, & the debris storm which will hit them back in 90 minutes, Matt & Ryan make their way to the International Space Station ISS, on their way to ISS they talk about their lives back on earth, at this point Ryan’s oxygen cylinder gets totally empty, but Matt tells her that she still has oxygen in her suit, when they reach ISS they see that ISS is heavily damaged too, the crew is ISS has left the station in a Russian Soyuz module, & the second modules safety parachute got activated accidentally due to the damage from the debris storm, without which the module is useless as it cannot reenter earth without the parachute to slow down the speed, Matt tells Ryan that the Soyuz module can still be used to get to the Chinese Space station called Tiangong, with Ryan almost out of Oxygen & Matt almost out of his Maneuvering thrust, they struggle to grab on to ISS, Ryan’s leg gets caught in the parachute cords, she grabs Matt as he passes her by, but the cord cannot support both of them, coz the speed & force is pushing them away from ISS, against Ryan’s will, Matt tells her to let him go & save herself, when she refuses Matt detach himself from Ryan drifting into open space away from Ryan & ISS, Ryan then makes her way to the Soyuz Module, she can still hear Matt on communications, telling her what to do, she enters into the airlock almost out of Oxygen,
Once inside she makes her way to the Control room of ISS & tries to Communicate with Matt but he does not respond, knowing that he is dead, Ryan sends a message to mission control giving the Situation Report, that she is the Sole Survivor, a fire breaks out into ISS she tries to put that out but fails, when the fire spreads around threatening Ryan’s life she is force to enter the Soyuz as she gets inside she takes the Fire Extinguisher with her, she detach the Soyuz Models & tries to navigate out of ISS & the mess around it, but the parachute cord again gets caught in the Soyuz module stopping it from going away from ISS, she struggles to keep the Soyuz module safe finally when se stabilizes the Module she goes out of her module to detach the cable restricting her from going away, she manages to detach them just as the space storm of debris hit ISS, the entire ISS station is destroyed but as she is now detached the Module survives she gets inside & align the Module to the Chinese Space station Tiangong but when she tries to start up the ship she finds that the engine has no fuel which is lost during the damage, she loses hope she tries to communicate with mission control but is patched up with a fishermen on radio, after that she decides to commit suicide, she turns off the cabin oxygen supply, as she begins to go into a sub conscious state, she sees Matt coming into the module, Ryan tells him that the Engine has no fuel, Matt tells Ryan that he will use the Soyuz’s landing rockets, that will give the module enough thrust to reach Tiangong, she regains consciousness & realize that she was dreaming, but she did get the idea what she has to do, she reactivates the cabin oxygen supply & make the settings, Ryan uses the Landing rockets to propel towards Tiangong, which is rapidly De Orbiting,
Ryan does not has the capability to attach to Tiangong coz she is now in a landing mode, meaning most of module’s components has detached, as she passes near Tiangong she ejects using “Explosive Decompression“, meaning she blows the door & the pressure ejects her out of the module, she uses the fire extinguisher that she brought from ISS, to get close to Tiangong, Ryan enters the Shenzhou capsule which is a Reentry Module, At this point Tiangong gets closer to Earth’s gravity pull & begins to break, she remembers that Matt told him that the Russian Soyuz & the Chinese Shenzhou are similar operations wise, with minor struggle she activates the module which is set to reenter earth, Ryan radios with no one to listen that she will enter earth dead or alive, when she reenters earth she hears from the communication that Mission Control Houston is tracking the module & will send someone to her landing location ASAP. During reentry some of the control panel gets some electrical malfunction starting a minor fire, Ryan suffocates, she opens the door but water beings to come inside the module drowning it, Ryan could not get out of the module coz of the water pressure, when the Module drowns completely Ryan manages to come out of the module but cannot swim up, coz her suit is too heavy, she gets rid of her suit & swims up almost running out of oxygen, she swims close to the shore, & floats to take rest, she sees the Tiangong breaking up into little pieces & entering earth looking like a Meteor Storm, she swims to shore & reaches land, she stand up relieved that she is finally back on earth,

Well this is story that shows the psychological & physical experiences of a astronaut in a deadly situation, the movie is mostly in space, has some decent Visual Fx, specially the space debris storm scenes, the movies goes through ups & downs, the story is simple but interesting, it projects how dangerous space is but also projects the human will to survive, the movie is fast enough not to bore you much, mostly all the things shown in the movie looks logical, Sandra Bullock as Ryan Stone suits her character to some level, the good thing is that the movie does not loses its focus much, it’s a straight forward linear movie, the earth from space shots are nice, coz we don’t get to see from outside everyday it looks nice, in all a decent movie worth watching once, I will give it 5.4/10
