We have been known to be a huge sleeping giant.

This giant has been dormant for decades is it about to waken from it long long sleep.

Potential is huge, it just needs uncapping:1980_boogie_down:

As enthusiasm and optimism returns, so crowds are increasing and the Robins have sold out their 1,800 ticket allocation for tomorrow's Banks's Stadium showdown against Walsall.

"That kind of support is fantastic really, and just goes to show the size of this football club," said Cotterill.

"I don't want to use the term 'sleeping giant', because we are still aiming to be that giant, but this is a club that will always have a good following when it is doing well. That is all credit to the players, because those are the people they are following."

In a Galaxy far far away,my football Manager told me that Bristol City were a sleeping giant.

Well he's been asleep for a long time, and needs a good kicking

The only sleeping Giant, in my opinion, that woke up, was/is Swansea City

I remember listening to both Swansea and Exeter on the last day of the season about eleven years ago

It was a toss up who would go down, unfortunatley it was Exeter and look where Swansea are now, with a nice new ground

We're in league 1 for **** sake. We aren't giants.... Man united, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern, Barcalona, Real Madrid, AC Milan... These are all giants. We are a big team in league 1 and a mediocre one in the championship. The best this club can ever hope for is that of what Swansea and Stoke have achieved. Sleeping giants is a stupid and false tag. If you believe it then you're deluded..

    Embarrassing...

Chuck in Wigan, Fulham, Reading, Cardiff, Burnley, and even ****ing Blackpool and Swindle...they all woke up eventually, although some did go straight back to sleep admittedly !

All been said before...city this size, club this size, this catchment area, etc etc

We are where we are because of bad management. Nothing more, nothing less. The painful truth is that despite the riches of our current owner, he has singlehandedly overseen what can only be described as a ****ing shambles and a laughing stock of a club for however many years he's been at the helm.
Being rich doesn't make you a great or knowledgeable football person.

Angelic whilst I agree that we haven't been great these last few years, Steve Lansdown isn't to blame.... in fact without his money we would be ****ed! Yes bad decisions have been made but at the time we ALL thought they were right... and what we all thought was a terrible decision (Cotterill's appointment) seems to have been the best one made since naming Johnson as boss. This club can go forward, we have the right tools, we just need a manager who knows what he's doing (which so far looks like we do) but to tag us as "Sleeping Giants" is ridiculous. The only giant that we are is the south wests and even then he's a midget compared to the rest....

I have just been all the way down to read a few Rovers threads and I am flabbergasted at their continual levels of delusion...

Then I come back to read this.

We are 10 games in to a level 3 season and we are doing alright, there is a long, long way to go.

    Shinys right, ****in embarrassing

I have to agree with Shiny and Banksy on this what have we EVER done to be called Giants? We've been runners up in the FA Cup once and no one on here (apart from Wiz <laugh>) can say they was there.
We are 10 games in taking 1800 to a game less than 90 minutes away **** me when Leeds Leicester and Florist were in this division I suspect they was not far from that EVERY game away. Even Coventry last season boasted big away followings.
To call us Giants on the basis we have a big catchment area is just being stupid.

Giants ? Think we need to keep our feet on the ground.
When the heavy ball arrives in a few weeks our lightweight 3some in midfield might get found out.

Hope not, but have I ever been wrong ?

Thank you Shiny - a voice of sense in a thread of nonsense. How often have we heard that size doesnt matter ?
If it did, The USA, China and India would win every World Cup that was staged.

Giants, we have never been, even in our heady days in the first division, we were never giants, average club trying to punch above our weight, and most of us remember where that got us. We all like where we are at the moment, and long may it continue, if we ever reach the promised land as they say, we would have to win many, many things, and then, and only then, could we ever get a tag like that.
By the way i will not be around to see it, but hope and pray some of you will be.

I like to see us progress up the road Southampton have followed, currently 2nd in the Premier League, I wouldn't consider them a giant but wow what a position to be in..

Errrrrrrrrr what does the above say, potential is vast, the catchment area is vast, under the right leadership and management, this club can go far.

Untapped and ready to be opened with a new ground in the making.

Sorry I disagree. As things stand right now we couldn't be a lot worse off without a billionaire owner.

Look at us. We're a L1 club who nearly dropped into L2 last season.

There are scores of clubs without massively rich owners who are a lot higher up the football pyramid than us.

Potential will always be used in conjunction with Bristol City, but it's an empty promise and always has been. Potential doesn't equal achievements

I have to agree completely. League 1 is the level of this club as it currently stands. We've been found out many a time in the Championship.

Bristol is a big city, but in terms of sport it's a minnow. We were an unlikely story during success, and even then we were rarely the club in the spotlight. People were more concerned about the bigger clubs we were stepping over.

We're a popular day out in League 1, and I think that we could be a decent Championship team, but the gulf in quality and size is just far too great. We're still relying on daddy's money to do well, and despite the pillar bollocks we're yet to bring a consistent first-team player through the academy.

If we were given a real push at academy level with Lansdown's money I think we could hit the Premier League in five years. This would mean poaching from Category 1 academies and assembling world-class coaching, but it would fast-track us to the top and provide a steady system to bring managers in. Until we are as good in the club as we are on the pitch, we'll always be minnows.
