Newcastle United have finalised the signing of Lens' France Under-19 international Mehdi Abeid.

The 18-year-old midfielder has penned a five-year deal at St James' Park. The youngster impressed the Magpies' coaching staff during a trial at the club.

The transfer had been all but signed off since the end of May, but went through officially when the transfer window opened this morning.

Reserve team manager Peter Beardsley said: "We are delighted to bring Mehdi to the club.

"He is a bright, young talent and we think he has an exciting future ahead of him."

Abeid is Newcastle's fourth French-born signing of the summer. Alan Pardew has already brought in Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux and Demba Ba.

All bodes well for the future having a youth team packed with talent.

With the careful development they could save the club a considerable sum in transfer fees in the next few years.

They just have to be given that chance to push through to the senior squad which is something that NUFC have failed to do in the past.

He's an attacking midfielder, I think he can play on the wing. He's put a video of himself on facebook, he tries the long pass and has a bit of skill <cheers>

Sounds like it IMO, but he's more comfortable out wide than Vuckic is. You'd like to think if they all developed to their max then those 2 and Ferguson could all be in the same XI.
