International managers often get criticised for calling up older players and for not thinking of the future, I think most are under pressure to bring through the youth before calling up an old hand for his debut. I would love to see him play for Portugal, seems a complete professional and has the ability no doubt. It's not an area I rate Portugal very highly in, defence!
Fonte getting called up would give me the same feeling as when Rickie got his call up. Fan favourite and fully deserves it. Fingers crossed its true.
Remember how excited you were when our players were getting into the international squads last season? Then what happened? Did any of them become better players for Saints? I don't begrudge a sound mush like Jose a chance to play for his country, but it's an increased injury & tiredness risk compared to him (and others) not being selected.
Confirmed in Echo that Fonte has said he is on the preliminary list. Fonte says not certain, but a start.
Would be well deserved. I remember when they asked Paulo Bento (previous national coach) about Fonte, he claimed to not even know who he was.
Good for Jose, but don't worry about the injury, TSS and I have arranged for him to get a cap, score the winner, then retire from International football
To be honest, if he's made the preliminary, he should make the squad - Portugal are extremely lightweight in defence.
Hopefully Fonte can channel the head butting-ness passed onto him by Osvaldo, by doing the same to Pepe.
I so hate to agree with this but I totally do. I used to LOVE watching the world cup as a kid, but the last few tournaments - as well the experience we had this summer after having so many international Saints - have led me to become very unenthusiastic when even our most-loved players get a call up now. I'm still proud of course, but I'd almost rather our players stayed under the radar.
