Just having a browse of the mackem match thread for today and someone mentioned about Swansea playing in the English league. It's a valid point IMHO, how come we won't let Celtic or Rangers in but Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham etc worm their way in? Wales have their own premier league it's not like there's anywhere else for them to go.

On another note, anyone out in toon tonight? We always just go to the same old places night in night out, are there any other trebles bars as good as Bijoux in Newcastle or have we found the place to be?

The Welsh Premier league is hardly the same stuff that Dinas Caerdydd and Abertawe play in, is it?

There's good and long historical reasons for this and long may it continue to be so.

But without Celtic and Rangers the SPL would be just the same. Put Swansea and Cardiff back in Wales and their league would be notably better.

Celtic and Rangers are suited to playing pub teams in a **** League in Scotland. Let them stay there for ****ing eternity.

Let's turn this the other way around. What's the problem with Welsh sides in the Premiership, assuming that one day the mighty Wrexham ever get to the Premiership?

Or, let's go one step further and make the league for English players only.

The Welsh teams were part of our league set up before UEFA existed, which is why they are allowed to continue in our league system and represent it in UEFA competitions. Celtic and Rangers were not part of our league system before UEFA existed and so there is no legal possibility of them playing in the Premier League without English teams being thrown out of Europe. It's against UEFA rules. Apart from anything, even if they were allowed to join the English football pyramid, that starts way below the Premier league, and they should start the in the Northern League the same as Darlington did when they reformed (I know the pyramid goes lower but the teams below that are happy to be bypassed).

It will never happen though, and speaking as somone who went to secondary school in the west of Scotland, it is no loss to us not having them while both clubs are still associated with such vile sectarian factions - even if they are now a minority.

I agree that there should be consistency.
    But where will it end?
We have welsh cricketers, SA cricketers, overseas rugby lads... Etc...

Does anyone believe there is more than one team in England and Wales capable of beating Sunderland this season

To be fair the Welsh cricketers, there isn't an English cricket team as such. Its title has the words "England and Wales" which for some reason gets overlooked by everyone, even the authorities. As for the South African cricketers I have no idea how that's permitted as I am equally baffled for those Southern hemisphere players who have played for New Zealand, Fiji, Western Samoa: all in the course of one illustrious career.

Mind you, I'm no better. I have to confess being a one cap wonder in the egg chasing game having turned out for Norway against Finland once upon a time.

I don't get all the saffers in our cricket team. I accept there are historical ties between the nations, just like with aus. I don't understand though the residency situ whereby there is no parentage tie, but you here for 6 years and all is good. Okf you are brought up here from say 16 down over, but coming here at say 23 and then qualifying? Sometimes they've represented national u19 teams etc.

It's the same with the all blacks just stealing al the Samos,Fiji players. Of course there are ties there. We may have seen a top Samoan or Fiji rugby side at some stage if they weren't all taken.

The rule makers have complicated things down the years and no point whining now. The cricket is a non issue as mentioned above, it's a combined board. I don't care about Cardiff etc, they are welcome. There wasn't a pro league when they formed. Yes there is now but I don't think you just forget they have invested down the years and kick them out.

That is quite a claim to fame to just be slipped in at the end there. I strongly suspect that you are the only international rugby player on this forum, never mind this board! No matter who it was for, an international cap in any sport is something to be very very proud of <ok>

It just doesn't make sense, play in your own country's league, surely. You'd have no problem if Chelsea decided the competition was better in Spain and headed over there?

This will happen one day. The week in week out Europa format is inevitable IMHO.
Maybe 10 years down the line but it is coming.

When that day comes I will be only interested in the local amateur leagues hereabouts. I have no interest in the European gravy train football and don't even bother to watch European nights any more as it's even less balanced than when the Top-4 get the ref's support.

What muddied the waters in this whole argument is that the Welsh have their own league too, as do the Scots.
Some say it should be all in or nothing.
