I went to a Red Robin restaurant last night - it's basically an upmarket burger place.

But one of the drinks on offer was a 'Hard Guinness Milkshake'. Draft Guinness with a shot of Jamesons mixed with chocolate ice cream and topped with whipped cream. Just how does that tickle your taste-buds ?

Alas I could not order one as I was driving. But I will report back here when I do.

Thanks Ak, I'd hate to try to mix Guinness with anything, when I ran a pub, one of my regulars liked Guinness shandy, you lost most of it to overflowing foam. Total nightmare!

They're talking about Darwin on another thread - that statement would have had him spinning in his grave.

Guinness shandy...? Sacrilege! Having worked in the O'Neills in Watford, I think we would have refused serving it!

No idea how you would poor that successfully though! I remember bitter shandies, having to take the widget nozzle off was about the only way of pouring it without getting a massive head!

I went into a pub in the centre of Dublin and an American tourist asked if she could have half a pint of guinness shandy - the barman just said No and turned away.

In my (admittedly fairly limited) experience, most pubs in Dublin (perhaps in the Republic) serve "draught" Guinness far too cold, thereby losing what flavour it has. Maybe the lemonade peps it up somewhat? <whistle>

Not where I was - it was the best pint of guinness I have ever had. :)

No Guinness here in Dorset, but some very interesting real ales from the Piddle Brewery. One had been brewed to celebrate the life of the local supermarket owner who had been a real lover of real ale and was very selective about what he stocked. A picture of him in the early days of his trading was on the bottle, and the contents were very good. There are some very quaint pubs that are still making a decent living by keeping their cellars in good condition, something that was quite difficult to find in my part of England when I was a resident. There is just not the chance to try these different brews in France.

Ah OFH, but your local brew has a different sort of appeal!
