I'm concerned that Can is not quite ready for role full time yet and may struggle, leading to him just getting treated like a young Lucas still settling into his role (AKA abused by fans for the rest of his career).
The problem with playing Gerrard further upfield is that he will compromise the high pressing. That's the issue we're seeing with Balotelli to some extent in that if one person doesn't press with such intensity, the system fails. (In fairness to Mario, he is pressing and working hard. Problem for him is that we will always compare his energy to Suarez which is unfair because Suarez is a unique player.)
I think it's safe to say that you've gone and done a Spurs. Sold your best player and replaced him with 5-6 very average players. Gerrard is far to old and slow to be starting games now.
Gerrard was moved to DM not just because he reads a game well and can lead from the back, but because he was getting slow on the ball. Going up the field, it is crowded: nimble feet are required. Gerrard would get stripped. Hendo is a better bet than Allen at DM, if Lucas is done and Can is adapting. Lucas doesn't seem to care in my eyes; he may have had some kind of beef with BR. The problem is Allen is out injured for a few more weeks, so Gerrard is going nowhere no matter what.
After 5 games it's "safe to say"? , at least wait until xmas to write off all our signings as "average"
I see one of the Sunday supement hacks said push Gerrard forward to do a pirlo between the lines. I'd actually consider this Pick a nominate 4-5-1 and let Gerrard play off the striker like a berg lamp. Won't work but we can try!
