You will not find a single Newcastle fan suggesting that they think we are there at the moment - or even close. The issue is that we don't even seem to be aiming for there even in the long term.

As for who I'd like us to finish above - at the start of the season I'd have picked out at least 10 clubs I'd like us to be above. Now I'd be happy if we could muster three. We're not on course to finish above three teams as things stand though.

I'm guessing that you're a Liverpool fan. So, with that in mind consider your club's fine history and imagine what it would be like if what's happening here has happened on Merseyside.

I used to watch Liverpool a lot in the 70s and 80s and was always impressed with their play. This was a team with passion and it flowed from the terraces to the pitch and back again. This Is Anfield, the sign said and it meant to visiting teams that they were about to visit a cauldron of hell.

Newcastle and Liverpool aren't miles apart in footballing traditional sense. We both want our respective clubs to do well, to perform well and to play for the shirt. Liverpool are one of the world's biggest clubs and you would expect results to go along with that stature. Newcastle is, most incredibly, the ninth biggest in the world. Therefore if we assumed that the other eight clubs, one of which would be yours, are all in the Premiership then coming mid-table would be right and, arguably, acceptable.

However, there are the Italian sides, the Spanish sides and others who are 'bigger' than Newcastle. This, then, should make Newcastle top four or five. Not bottom again.

I mentioned culturally. We're from various flavours of 'the North'. Liverpoof FC to those on Merseyside isn't just a plc offering entertainment on a Saturday afternoon; it's a cultural home and this translates to what Liverpool means to those fans on the (traditionally) Catholic side of Liverpool means more to them that does Tottenham does to North Londoners. The tie between club and city is immense; one can't imagine a Liverpool without a Liverpool FC whereas one could imagine (though not necessarily wish) a North London wthout Spurs. The same goes up in Newcastle and in Sunderland; this is our city, our culture and at the head of it is our club.

This is what Robson wrote in his books, why he wanted to come back and manage on the Tyne. This is why Shearer turned down Manchester United at the last moment and returned Home. The club is important and is more than just a plc and like your club it matters.

Liverpool have been fortunate because they have their European nights and their success. And as clubs go they may be bigger than Newcastle but not in orders of magnitude. If the roles were reversed and your club was constantly punching below its weight for decades you'd be upset.

If you had an owner which didn't care for your club but only wanted it for "its brand" and "global awareness" as Ashley's lawyers said to Hall's when the club was sold and you saw in the years to come that it is reduced to being a massive advertisement for second rate tat clothing and nothing more then you'd be really annoyed.

Satbility? Yes, as much as falling brick has stability. I could go on but it all boils down to a betrayal of the relationship between the club and the people. This is a bigger club than most people think; perhaps it's the world's biggest unsuccessful club, but the fact remains that the tie between the club and the region are being sorely tested by an owner who simply doesn't care about the club.

Imagine the Kop being turned into executive boxes, your players bought and sold purely knowing that a player can turn a 200% profit in two years and that the ambition of the owner was not to be lower than seventeenth...

Imagine all that and then you're on your way. Excue the ramble, I've been exploring the gin cupboard again.

Whoa. There is a huge difference between being able to afford these players and spending money on them.

I am assuming that you're not here as a WUM but just misinformed or misunderstanding of the situation. Your club may wish to break the bank to get better players in order to compete for the top positions and for Europe. Your owners may actually want the best for your club and be willing to spend to get there.

If so, that's fine. But that's not the case here and this is why there are so many angry people. The club has a huge worldwide exposure; it is a well known club and it was bought as a clotheshorse for Ashley for that reason. His target is not to get to Europe (well it would be if it didn't come with risk or cost) but not to get kicked out of the Premiership.

Yes, the money is there. But it's not being spent. Look at the transfer tables for the last few seasons and look who's at the foot of it again. With 50,000 coming through the doors each week and worldwide following (which means lots of shirt sales) that's a huge income. But a large income doesn't equate to large purchases, certainly not at this club.

Worry about your own club. You lot hounded out benitez, a guy we would love to have here. Pardew is a tactical dinosaur, lies to the fans all the time, spineless, constant array of excuses and most of us have grown tired of it. You lot wouldn't want a ****er like him at the bridge would you? No, and nor do we.

We get your point. So seeing as you think our club has it sooo good, how about we swap owners, managers and playing squads with Chelsea. Deal?

Yes, his team is perfect, has a good manager and bag fulls of ****ing cash, everything is rosy yet he feels us Newcastle fans demand too much and we should get in line to suck Alan' the mastermind of tactics' Pardew 12 inch warty, syphllic riddled shaft.

Simple. We expect the club to employ a manager who can get the most from the squad, play football the correct way in line with the club ethos I.e on the deck and entertaining. We expect money generated by TV, merchandise etc to be reinvested in playing squad. We don't expect a sugar daddy but we are recording profits and yet never do anything except sell players for large amounts of money and then try to get new ones for less. We are fine with this if the quality coming in is good enough to achieve mid table playing correctly. It isn't. Personally I'd like to see an English core of players I can identify with and who will give us a stable base to build from. I find our transfer policy absurd and feel completely cold about our current playing staff bar some who have been here a while, young Aaron's, and er that's it really. I'd like us to get a spine in place and keep it. Id like all the cheap ass way of doing stuff to be reined in a bit. I don't think it would take much to appease the fanbase. Just a bit of vision and fore thought. Just a sprinkling of giving a **** and among the fans feel part of it

well sorry if I offended anybody with my questions and subsequent opinions.

also id like to point out I tried to back out of this discussion when a few guys answered with pretty calm and considered opinions...somebody asked me mine I gave it and got a fair bit of stick for the demanded reply...

im a big boy so I can take it all I understand fans can be passionate. Its clear a lot of you disagree with what I had to say so perhaps im wrong? Maybe not...as I said all the best fpr the season chaps!

The fact that you did not listen (read) and take in what was said to you means either lack of intelligence or that you are a WUM!

You didn't offend anyone as most people will have seen that you are a WUM!

Oh and yes you are wrong on the Newcastle United predicament! Au revoir!
