One of my staff who coaches lower leagues football crossed paths with Charlie Austin a number of years ago and has been charting his progress long before he donned the hooped jersey at QPR. Out of the blue, he texted me this stat ahead of today's match: Charlie played his last game for Poole Town on this day in 2009, scoring 5 goals in a 6-1 win. I have my own 'sliding doors' stat to share about Jane's great grandson: Whatever course he took, he was destined to be a Premier League player by June 2014. if we can get the ball to him and support him, he will score goals. People were complaining he did little at ManU last weekend - truth is he was playing 20 yards ahead of anyone else. Hopefully today sees a very different setup, one where we look to take the game to Stoke - I fully expect to see him convert chances if we do... be interesting to see if he and Vargas both start.
He's a gutsy forward and instinctive forward - which gets you goals (and sometimes injuries). I believe he'll come good when given the opportunities. It is a big step up, but he is self driven and ambitious (meteoric rise in just 5 years shows that). Good luck to him and would be great to see his success in blue and white hoops.
My thoughts exactly! Given enough support I can see him scoring a decent amount of goals for us. Whether they wil be enough to keep us winning games remains to be seen.
To get the best out of Charlie we have got to get crosses into the box, his heading is his greatest asset in my opinion. Our wide men must take on their man and get to the by-line and then we will reap the benefit.
