Match Apointments

Assistants: G Beswick & D Bryan
Fourth Official: L Mason

Burnley host Sunderland at Turf Moor on Saturday in a clash of sides still looking for their first win of the Premier League campaign.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets currently sit in the early relegation zone, with just two points from their opening four games on their return to the top flight.

Those two points came in their last two games after successive goalless draws against Manchester United and then Crystal Palace.

With the defence standing firm, Dyche will be looking for goals at the other end, with the Clarets finding the net just once in the top flight this term, the equal lowest total with fellow new-boys QPR.

Opponents Sunderland have fared only marginally better, with three points from their opening four fixtures, including a 2-2 home draw with Spurs last weekend.

Burnley Team News
Burnley striker Danny Ings will miss Saturday's meeting with Sunderland after suffering a hamstring injury in last weekend's draw against Palace.

Ings joins long-term absentee Sam Vokes (knee) on the sidelines meaning Marvin Sordell and Ashley Barnes come into contention.

Matt Taylor is also out with a niggling Achilles problem but loan duo Nathan Chalobah and Michael Keane are eyeing debuts.

Sunderland Team News
Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet faces a series of difficult decisions ahead of the trip to Burnley.

The Uruguayan has no significant injury doubts but needs to decide whether or not to change the side which started last time as he looks for a first league win of the campaign.

Defender Billy Jones and midfielders Will Buckley and Jordi Gomez are among those men pushing for starting berths, although Poyet has indicated striker Connor Wickham, who was effective as a lone striker last weekend, will retain the role.

Burnley- Lucas Jutkiewicz
Burnley go into this game with the joint-lowest goals tally in the league (1), a dubious honor they share with fellow promotion rivals QPR, who’ve at least managed to win a game so far. The pressure will be on Jutkiewicz, a £2.25m arrival from Middlesbrough, to replicate his pre-season form, where he scored 6 goals in as many matches for the Clarets. His early season form is looking solid; his link-up play with the Burnley midfield and Danny Ings beside him showed promise in their goalless draw against Mancheter United, a game in which he won 83% of his aerial duels and completed 2 interceptions higher up the pitch. He was also commanding against Crystal Palace, holding up the ball well, creating a clear-cut chance and ending the game with a 75% pass accuracy; but as a striker he is yet to deliver where it matters, goals, and he’ll be hoping to get off the mark against the Black Cats on Saturday, a team he’s previously scored against in an FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough.

Sunderland– Adam Johnson
The 27-year old English winger was on fine form against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, being responsible for a majority of Sunderland’s attacks and scorer of their first equalising goal in the 4th minute. He gave Eric Dier a hard time, and the Black Cats will be looking to get the ball to him as often as possible as he possesses the ability to both cut inside and find a pass or shot through the centre of defence or take it to the flank and cross it to Conor Wickham. He created 4 chances through successful crosses against Tottenham in addition to his goal, and his battle with Ben Mee on the right flank will be a key battle all through the game. His 8 goals and 5 assists propelled Sunderland to safety last season, and Gus Poyet will be hoping he can replicate his good form in what is now a must-win game.

The Managers
Dyche watched the draw at Palace and spotted green shoots. "You can see the belief is growing," he said. "We just missed that extra quality in the top third."
To address that problem, he'll pray Sordell can answer his prayers – the man he sold to Bolton for £3.2m while at Watford, then brought to Turf Moor for £500,000. "He showed signs," said Dyche of Sordell's appearance at Palace. "It's just that little bit of belief in himself (that he needs) and it will come."
Meanwhile, opposite number Poyet was smiling after the Spurs game, relieved to have taken a point they didn't deserve and which he probably didn't expect. "I can tell you we are very realistic here and we know who we are playing against," he said, referring to the leagues within the league. He then boldly proclaimed: "We will get the three points in the next couple of weeks."

Posters Prediction
This week we've got one of the most knowledgeable posters on the board, our very own Gustavo's Gonads. Cheers fella. Due to a lack of activity on the Burnley board I've taken some Q&A from a writer from Burnley Fanzine 'No Nay Never', Jamie Smith. Taken from his interview with the Roker Report which contains a rather dubious assessment on The Lads.
Who are the Burnley players we most need to look out for this Saturday?

Jamie: We're a team rather than star individuals really, but Arfield has stood out so far this season. He's scored our only goal so far, so it's hard to look past him, but he could easily have had two or three more. He'll play on the right, but not really as a winger. Trippier will try to get forward from right-back, but we're putting a lot of faith in Boyd to be our main creator, especially if Danny Ings' hamstring injury is a bad one. Jason Shackell is very solid at the back and David Jones has absolutely dominated the midfield in the last two-and-a-half games.

Are there any Sunderland players that you’re wary of heading into the match and, if so, why?

Jamie: Honestly? Not really (sorry!). There's ‘has-beens’ like Brown and O'Shea who are still useful and then those like Johnson and Rodwell who have yet to fulfil their potential, but Sunderland just don't have a lot of good players. On his day, Johnson is tough to stop, but luckily his day only seems to be four or five times a season and assuming he plays on the left, Trippier is good enough to keep him quiet. I'm more worried about Lee Cattermole breaking half our team! Sunderland haven't kept a clean sheet yet, so it's a decent chance for Jutkiewicz and others to get their first goals.

Do you have a score prediction for us? Goalscorers, too, if any?!

Jamie: It's our easiest game so far on paper so I'm positive we'll get a result, especially if we play as well as we have in our last two games. You do wonder where our goals are coming from though. It'll probably be a tight one - I'll go 1-0 with Arfield to score.
Stats & Facts
• Burnley have won just one of the last 12 matches in all competitions against Sunderland (W1 D5 L6).
• Steven Fletcher represented Burnley on the last occasion these sides met (2009/10); he remains Burnley’s leading Premier League scorer (8 goals).
• After his flurry of five goals in three games to help Sunderland stay up last season, Connor Wickham has now gone seven Premier League games without one.
• Sunderland are one of three teams yet to keep a clean sheet this season (along with Arsenal and West Ham).

That`ll be you pissed at 8am then. <doh>

Think he`s a sub. Nobody from Burnley interested enough to join in by the look of it.

edit: Just had a look on their board. Not even a match thread that I can see. Massive enthusiasm that like.

Think it's funny how confident they are for this game! Don't think we've got any players that can cause them any problems.!?!?

Let's hope the players come out thinking the same and we batter them.

Think every away game is tough in the prem but would like to think we turn up and get our first win.

Got feeling this lad will know about Giacc and AJ by the end of the game. They both look like they're coming into form.

His Catts comments sum it up. He knows **** all about us.

Burnley are ****, woefully short of PL standard. Simple as that.

I will be annoyed if we don't register 3 points.

Me as well, it actually infuriated me when I read that.

He may as well say 'I don't watch anyone but Burnley, so I know **** all'.

They are woefully short as I say, and he thinks Alvarez, Giacc, Wickham, Buckley, Gomez etc can't harm them?

I only hope his team turn up in that mindset.

Unfortunately this is how the rest of the Premier League view us, lets hope we prove this lot wrong.

My fear is the small(ish) pitch which is just about the size of QPR's which could restrict our game. I do not see why we should not beat them though through sheer quality and PL experience.
