Adel Taarabt has suffered an ankle injury in training and is “back to square one” in his attempt to get back to full fitness, according to manager Harry Redknapp.

Taarabt, who has not started a league game this season, limped out of a training session and a scan has indicated that he has strained a ligament.

The news is a setback for Rangers as the Moroccan had been showing a real desire to get fit, having previously been criticised by Redknapp for being out of shape.

“He’s twisted his ankle, so we’re back to square one with him,” said Redknapp.

“He’s had a scan. He’s stretched a ligament and I’ve spoken to the doctor about it.”

Redknapp says Taarabt’s fitness was starting to improve

Taarabt, the star of QPR’s 2010-11 promotion-winning campaign, has long been out of favour with Redknapp, who sold him to Rangers when Tottenham manager.

The forward spent last season out on loan, first at Fulham, where he failed to impress, and then at AC Milan.

He fared much better at the San Siro and hoped to secure a permanent move there during the summer, but it did not materialise and, not for the first time, his attitude was criticised by Redknapp.

More recently, Taarabt has appeared to be edging towards a return to fitness.

But his injury leaves Rangers with a problem as they fear a spell on the sidelines could lead to his weight ballooning again.

“He has shown interest, but we can’t get him fit because he’s now got a problem with his ankle – just when we thought he was starting to get fitter,” Redknapp added.

“He came out for training and after about 15 minutes he had to limp off again because his ankle was too sore.

“Do you rest him for a few weeks? And if you rest him how is he going to get fit?

“We need to get his weight down and get him fit to play. He’s got to get himself fit and if he does that he could be a big asset for us.”

That's a big blow, as we look short on goals imo.

I think there's something wrong with our training setup. Its beginning to get like last season with players picking up injuries left, right and center.

I was told by a reliable source, he tripped over one of his chins............... then, once in a falling mode, did a 'half pike' followed by a 'cutaway' which led into a triple somersault for which cause a 'heavy entry' onto the grass. It was then that Adel noticed that no one was paying attention, thus leading him to offer a 're-entry into the 'triple somersault' accumulating into the second offending ' heavy entry'.

Fellow squad players thought that Adel may have been faking it, which was confirmed by the judges scores of 5 - 4.5 - 4 -5.

Upon seeing the scores, Harry thought it best to get Adel escorted from the arena and immediately signaled for a media conference

You couldn't make it up. Our training methods must be out of the ark. If the lack of cohesive tactics doesn't do for us injuries will. It seems we are similar to Hodgson's training methods which saw several players come away from last week's matches with injuries that may have been avoided...

Shiite. I am longing for the day when he starts again for us. How disappointing. Harry keeps getting his digs in I see about his weight and fitness. Unnecessary.

It does seem and has for a while, that our training methods are flawed. Too many injuries, usually hamstrings.

Is it our training our is it just the fragileness of the modern footballer. Similar levels of injuries exist at Arsenal, Spurs and Lpool. Burnley have lost Ings.....a huge loss, imho. Much bigger than our loss of Adel.....who would not/could not have played a large part.

Injuries occur when unfit players try to do things their bodies were not ready to do.

I have a pretty clear idea where to lay the blame here.....as we well know, you can't tell Adel what to do

i hardly think an ankle going while playing football is indicative of flawed training methods chaps - that kind of injury is part and parcel. If Tarbs wasn't such a fatty his ankles might have half a chance of supporting his rotund figure!

The hamstrings issue at one point last season did seem like a training issue though i'll agree.

This seems like something out of nothing really and the only thing it'll provide is an insight into Adel's determination although, from the way it's stated, it sounds like it's a struggle to get him motivated.

Arry seems disinterested/resigned to the point where he doesn't even seem bothered when one of his 25 will actually be back.

Ankle injuries, in my experience, tend to be down to a poor playing surface, poor warm up or existing injuries but it doesn't sound like he should be sidelined for a very short time (less than 2 weeks).

True, she couldn't be wedged between the posts to keep the goals out

Yep, turning too sharply. I think the bit you quoted looked like a dig but I don't think there's anything too sinister about a sprained ankle.

He can cycle, swim, row lift iron, and do all sorts of more pleasurable exercises with a sprained ankle Arry. Just give him a break from the ball for a few days, strap it up and shut up. Luv the Doc
