Not as bizarre as it sounds. Reading in the Indy that many Shetlanders want to see how the national vote goes first, but IF it is yes by a small majority and IF Shetland itself is overwhelmingly No (as is expected) they will almost certainly agitate to become a Crown Dependency, as in The Isle of man and the Channel Isles. That should be f**ing hilarious as they will use the precise same arguments that the SNP as used about England and the Westminster government about Edinburgh (and, tbf, that the Tories are using about Brussels).

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/04/16/uk-scotland-independence-shetland-idUKBREA3F0SH20140416

Interesting that the same Salmond who derided Brown's pledge's of more Scots' powers in the event of a No vote as being too little too late has deemed to 'look' at more powers for the Shetlands. Hypocrite indeed.

Regardless of the vote today we should move pdq to enable that vote so that the Scots really would have to think twice about independence.

The Shetlands is highly Nationalist and most of the fields would fall to them if they claimed the right to be independent akin to the Isle of Man and used the same methodology as Salmond has used to create this vote............now that would be poetic

Hmmm. Bp say 1/8th of what salmond claims. That would seem likely as bp and others have been winding down operations around the uk.

Now of course theres the small matter of convinving companies to drill there again based on very different estimations from experts amd salmond its not going to be easy. Theres also the fact that oil companies prefer digging where there are vast reserves. Thats not scotland.

So how low will the tax for oil companies need to be in orser for them to be tempted back? Very low i suspect.

The shetlands throw a massive spanner in the works too. Salmomd looks like a massive liar in all honesty. Like hes lied to an entire country for his own gain.

True, but even half that estimate is a huge bonus

    Dream on? <laugh>

Yes the economics and technical aspects of getting the oil are important, Ireland just flogged it off instead of having the oil land in Ireland because of those concerns though the deals that were struck were dodgy as f**.

Still, with 50 or more years of oil to be tapped.. from when they start tapping it proper, would be worth investing in.

it really does come down to who is calling the shots and how they proceeded and I get the feeling there's little faith in those who'll be calling the shots if they vote yes, going by the general theme of this thread anyways

Sis, you do know that there's hundreds of years of coal still sitting under the north of England, don't you? Why do you think it's not being mined as we speak?

The Irish Sea has plenty of exploratory drilling rigs in operation from Scotland down to the Celtic Sea.

Don't know who owns them but they're there.

We should make that happen, as I said earlier up the thread. Then the next time the Scots want to hold the country to ransom they would really know that Salmond's Sugar Candy Mountain was a heap of crap.

Still oil and gas reserves obviously but to the extent salmond has claimed? According to every expert and majpr oil company the answer is no. Not even close.

Someone's lying and well, the scot is the only one with something to lie about here.

Maybe Salmond read Prof McCrone's report after it was declassified.

[h=2]DESPITE the fact a secret report stated Scotland would become one of the world's richest nations thanks to oil, the country now faces more pain at the pumps.[/h]
