I've noticed over the last week or so that when everybody is doing their 'starting line up' predictions for next season, the majority leave Jonas out in favour of Marveaux. I've just been looking at Marveaux's stats for the last few years v Jonas and it doesn't look great to be honest.

Here's the stats for starts and sub appearance for both (all competitions).

    2010/11. Jonas 35 + 4 as sub, Marveaux 9 + 1 as sub.
    2009/10. Jonas 37 + 4 as sub, Marveaux 33 + 2 as sub.
    2008/09. Jonas 25 + 4 as sub, Marveaux 3 + 2 as sub.
    2007/08. Jonas 24 + 8 as sub, Marveaux 12 + 13 as sub.

    Total: Jonas 121 starts + 20 sub = 141. Marveaux 57 starts + 18 sub = 75

Without doubt Jonas still has a major role to play. It's questionable how many games we will get out of Marveaux, especially as we seem to pick up more than our fair share of injuries. If over the course of the season we get 20 odd starts then it'll be okay. Looking at the figures though it seems like Jonas will still start over half the matches even if Pardew did prefer Marveaux, purely because Marveaux will miss a lot of games injured and Jonas doesn't pick up many injuries. So let's hope Jonas has a good year next year as he still has a big job to do for us.

Here are the links to the stats site for anyone that's interested.

Would like to see an assists per game and goals per game comparison as well, will see if I can find them out.

EDIT: they're on those ESPN links, now to do the maths.

Not really that impressive obviously he's improving though.
Spiderman is very underrated imo though as he adds far more to the team then attacking qualities.

Agreed, he doesnt get a lot of direct assists but loads of the free kicks he wins turn into goals, and nearly every Enrique assist comes from a Jonas pass to play him in.

I like Jonas and thought he did really well last year. Mainly because it dawned on him that you don't have to actually walk the ball into the net everytime. Sometimes you just have to get it knocked in the box and let the melee begin! I still think he could play down the right or centrally too.

I think common sense tells us Marveaux will miss a lot of games. He has missed huge chunks of football over the last 3 or 4 seasons, I think he has been under the knife 4 or times in that period too. Just one of those players.

For me there is still a role for Jonas as Marveaux will miss games and will need time to get used to the league.

Agree, and the competition for his place might inspire some better performances.

The Chelsea away game did Jonas good though, I thought he was very good playing "in the hole", and hopefully can cover both positions of needed, as well as on the right.
