The best way forward is more autonomy for the individual countries of the UK, including England, and continued union. It will be tragic if the UK breaks up after all these centuries...there is no place in the world for small countries...where do you stop? I understand Cornwall is seeking independence now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
What we need is a bit of federation in the UK. Counties could be responsible for their own needs, instead of all the centralisation. Liberal Democrats/Liberal Party have been saying this for eons.
On the unelected governments point - England voted Conservative in 2005 but got a Labour government, and that PM was Scottish and his Scottish successor was unelected!
This has in part been happening. The government used to pay for most things centrally and councils dealt solely with local type stuff, then more and more things were shared out and that is when council taxes shot up. The trouble is that people will want money spent on local things, but also want the same as everyone else. Look how people moan when there is a postcode lottery with health care.
I admire Cameron for how much he cares about the UK staying together...after all England will have a permanent Conservative government without Scotland, so he is thinking beyond his own personal interest in this matter.
If Scotland vote yes, they will get rid of the nuclear deterrent. This means that England can then nuke them without fear of retaliation, grab the oil and reinstate feudalism and prima nocte. This might seem a tad severe, but works in my head. Plus its as realistic as Braveheart,

That`s why Cameron, Milliband, Clegg and Co have been Scotland this week in panic mode then. And the English who live in Scotland do get a vote, the majority of whom will vote No.
"Unelected"? We don't elect a Prime Minister in this country - we don't have a presidential system. And for the record, I hope Scotland vote YES on Thursday. If I had the chance to rid myself of the Tories, and the right, I bloody well would. Labour need Scotland, but siding with the Tories and the Lib Dems will only do more damage.
The Westminster elite may be in panic mode, but the average English punter seems largely indifferent. If anything, opinion polls asking English people about the question of Scottish independence received a definite "Yes" result. English people in Scotland and Scots in England, by their nature and situation, tend to be more pro-Union. I, for example would not want to be living in a foreign country in Wales.
My uncle and auntie will both be voting no. They believe Salmond is just out to get in the history books and doesn't really have a clear plan.
