I see threads all of the time saying how marvellous Peter reids team were in the premier league and comparing now with then. But this is my opinion and i think the premier league and footballers in general are better than they were fifteen years ago and the tactics, training and management are lightyears ahead from fifteen years ago and i seriously don't think you can make any comparisons. The old managers such as Reid and O'Neil wouldn't stand a chance in today's league and as my dad always tells me youth beats experience because experienced players don't take risks and are scared of trying new things where as youth are fearless and that's how you win things.
Or compare Steve Bruce against Poyet , because Bruce gave Sunderland their highest finish in recent years
Can't really argue too much with anything you say Douglas. But if I was given the choice between the 2, it would take me quite a while to decide on which one. Reidy took us places we'd never been in my generation
That Reid team would get ripped to bits at the back now. Actually, it did anyway, we did conceda few.... I still maintain that it would score goals for fun though, the sytsem was basic and antiquated but the side worked because the players we have were perfect fit for their roles. I think the current team would probably beat the Reid team, but then, qould our back 4 currently be able to stop SKP, Quinny, Summerbee... Probably not.
Players are too clever now I mean a proper modern day striker like Costa, Suarez or baloteli are on a different stratosphere compared to the likes of Quinn and Philips.
Have to disagree on that though. I think Philips, as a mid-twenties to early 30's would still be right up there in the PL goals rankings. He was a natural finisher, had no fear and continued to prove his predatory skills into his late 30's. My god, how much would he go for in his prime in today's market? I don't think £50m is an overstatement.
