Living in Derby, I have come across the ongoing (and vicious) rumour that our Waggy might be making his way up the M1. I would personally hate it as he is an excellent prospect, one we spent £3m on. Thoughts?

    Just posted this on ja

Waggy is the player I would most like to see succeed at The Walkers - The unbridled joy he displayed when he scored the Bristol goal last season summed him up for me - He clearly loves it at Leicester and the fans have a great affinity for him. Sadly I don't think we will be able to keep him,, he wants first team football and Sven won't give him that as a regular starting player

Yeah good point, otherwise SGE would have used him more already, be a shame for him as he was maybe brought in under false pretenses. Apparently Dyer is another on his way out, a fan favourite?

Its only really annoying because we are losing the team that got us into the play-offs under Pearson.

I wouldn't like to see waggy gone until we had bought in Nugent plus either Maynard or CMS, then yes, he won't (unfortunatly) even make the bench.

Im surprised Pearson hasn't got him on the bench for Hull tbh.

Do you think Sven would loan him out for a season and see how he develops?

If he came to us he probably wouldn't be on the bench, he'd more than likely displace Jay Simpson.

Not sure Waggy would swallow that after having been farmed out on loan several times already, whole reason he left Sunderland was to get his head down and start his career properly

Derby have signed Chris Mcguire or someone from Scotland.

    Maybe this ends their interest?

Sven has said Waggy is in his plans. I think we'll need a fair offer given before we let him go.

I do think it's quite possible though.

Waggy could be the revelation that he threatened to be. Second season syndrome effects a lot of young lads. The play very well for the first season as no pressure and everything falls right. Then they have to live up to expectation (and in Waggys case a price tag) and it doesnt quite go their way. They then have to lift themselves out of that black cloud. As a stiker this is very hard and let's face it his first touch was so poor last season he could trap a ball further than I could kick it. He needs confidence and needs to find that in pre-season. If I was him I would beg to stay and improve over the summer with the friendlies. He could then start the season as that 3million pound striker that we are looking to buy. Sven needs to take a chance and hold out for him and then decide a week or two away from the transfer window closing or at that point loan him out again. I think if he was loaned out to a L1 side for 3 months he would gain that confidence he desperately needs. The boy has something and he will have a future - the question is whether that future is with us.

I would offer him to Peterborough or Bristol only on loan as part of the CMS/ Maynard deal if they come off

Like Hobbs I´d be sad to see him go, BUT with SGE, it´s out with the old & in with the new.

Would love him to stay, He can be such a good impact player and does upset defences, but will he settle for that? could learn alot with sven.

I don't really get all the support Waghorn gets. He seems to fall into the Chris Weale camp of players who seems to get praise and adoration from fans, despite being distinctly average on the pitch. The only assumptions I can make are a) he has a slightly odd name, b) he 'works hard' (i.e. runs and runs and runs but with no end product) and c) there were players who were allegedly weaker than he was in that position last season.

For me, Waghorn was one of our weakest performers last year. He was signed for an outrageously inflated fee, to appease disgruntled fans following a poor start to the season. Since then he has done nothing, he scored I think 3 goals, contributed little to the team and was generally below average. Whether it was the pressure of the fee that dragged him down, or he just isn't that good, I'm not sure. But last year he was poor for us. He did very well in the NP team that had gallons of belief from the L1 winning campaign, and being a loanee he probably had no fear, but last year he was an absolute shadow of the player.

To be fair to the lad, he seems quite a nice and popular guy, bit dim but most footballers are, and he seems to get on well with the rest of the team. But as a player, I struggle to see what he could offer for us. Talk of him potentially scoring 20 goals next year seems well off the mark and incredibly ambitious. To me, Waghorn seems to be the kind of player who will score 10-12 goals over 40+ games with an average NPC team. But he isn't a promotion winner IMO. He lacks the composure in front of goal to score the required amount of goals, and he doesn't offer anything else to the team either on the wing or up-front. If an offer of anything in excess of £1m came in for him, I'd bite their hands off, or use him as bait in the CMS and Maynard swoops.

He was quite a bit better than the favoured Vassell last season.

In the second half of the season he almost always only got on the pitch for the last 5-10 minutes. When you are a young player and have a lot of expectation on your shoulders you are bound to be desperate to prove yourself, and this isn't neccessarily a good thing.

I thought Waghorn was trying almost too hard last season - people talk about him blasting it over the bar a lot (a fair observation) but to me that seemed a product of his anxiousness to prove something.

He had a poor season last season but he also showed glimpses of quality. Yakubu and Vassell were playing absolutely **** in quite a few games and we were in general playing ****. Waggy came off the bench and even in 5 minutes he caused them all sorts of problems.

Under Pearson he was absolutely fantastic and that is not an exaggeration. The thing with young players is they need chances to prove themselves and time to develop, Waggy was just not given this last season, whereas he was under Pearson. Maybe this is why he should move on, where the expectation is less and the chances to prove yourself are greater.

There is no doubt he has potential though, he does need to work on his finishing but on his day he's a very promising young striker. Quick, strong, skilful and when he's on form a great first touch. He can also make something out of nothing, which players like CMS and Nugent can't do.

It's probably not the best environment for him here but I think you underrate his talent.
