The Bluebirds have got off to a relatively good start to the new campaign and sit ninth place in the table, five places and two points behind the Canaries. Just like Norwich, Cardiff will be hoping for a swift return to the top flight and the current form of both clubs suggests a draw as the most likely outcome. please log in to view this image Kenwyne Jones hits home against the Cottagers Last time out Cardiff secured a valuable away point at the other relegated Premier League side Fulham drawing the game 1-1, Kenwyne Jones firing in a 55th minute equaliser after the hosts had taken the lead mid way through the first half courtesy of Tim Hoogland. Norwich meanwhile were battling out a 1-1 draw themselves at Carrow Road against Bournemouth, Lewis Grabban 'grabbing' his fifth goal of the season for the Canaries before they succumbed to a 45th minute leveller from one of their pre-season transfer targets namely Callum Wilson. Had Norwich held on to their lead until half-time most would have fancied City to take all three points, as it happened the equalising goal gave the Cherries a confidence boost and a stalemate ensued. please log in to view this image Lewis Grabban was on target for the fifth time in as many games against Bournemouth Current Form Cardiff City: WWLWD Norwich City: WWWWD Match History There have been 46 competitive matches between Norwich City and Cardiff City, the first one being a League Division Three (South) fixture at The Nest in 1931 where the Canaries ran out 2-0 winners, they beat the Bluebirds by the same scoreline in the return fixture that season at Ninian Park. Historically Norwich have had the upper hand with 24 victories to Cardiff's 14, there have been 8 drawn games. Norwich also have a pretty good away record at Cardiff in 23 encounters they have won 8 and drawn 3. Cardiff on the other hand have a pretty poor record at the home of the Canaries where they have only managed to win twice. Norwich's biggest margin of victory over the Bluebirds was at Carrow Road on 14th December 1963 in League Division Two where they beat them by 5 goals to 1. Cardiff's best result was a 6-1 thrashing of the Canaries at Ninian Park on 28th December 1946 in League Division Three (South). Bellamy began his footballing career at Bristol Rovers as a nine-year old before being snapped up by Norwich where he progressed through their youth system to the first team. He made 84 appearances for the Canaries in four seasons scoring 32 times before joining Coventry City in August 2000, the Sky Blues smashing their transfer fee record when they paid Norwich £6 million for his services. In a colourful career spanning 9 clubs (if you include Bristol Rovers and a loan spell at Celtic), he finally realised his boyhood dream when Cardiff City became his 10th and final club. please log in to view this image Cardiff's Craig Bellamy battles it out with Norwich's Martin Olsson last term Prolific goalscorer Robert Earnshaw also plied his trade with both clubs, in two spells with the Bluebirds 'Earnie' scored 89 times in 202 appearances and netted 27 times in just 45 games for the Canaries. Now in the twilight of his career he currently plays in the MLS for Chicago Fire. please log in to view this image Robert Earnshaw during his Norwich City playing days Others who have pulled on both the canary yellow and blue (now red of course) jerseys are, Steve Grapes, Mark Walton, Tony Warner, Peter Thorne, Keith Robson, Spencer Prior, Phil Mulryne, Andy Marshall, Doug Livermore, Alan Lee, Simon Lappin, Ross Jack, Roger Hansbury, Mark Farrington, Kevin Cooper, Leon Barnett, Joe Lewis, David Marshall, Tom Adeyemi and most recently Anthony Pilkington and Cameron Jerome. I don;t know where you manage to dredge all this info up from, especially the old stuff - fantastic! I think I'd take a point now as well, but looking forward to the game. Seems like months since we last played!
Hope it's a good game today and that the best team take the spoils, as we need the points! I take the opportunity to impart some of my memories of clashes against the mighty canaries. 29 Aug 1962 Cardiff City v Norwich City 2-4 League Division Two I remember this game well, we had been relegated from the old first division, and we had a Kenyan international (one cap) left winger, Bristolian Peter Hooper who had a thunderbolt shot that rivalled the legendary Ipswich striker Ted "Cannonball " Phillips. He was knocking in goals regularly for City, most of which were unstoppable rockets from 30 yards plus. The crowd were chanting "Hooper, Hooper" as they did then, and he obliged with two in the first half, giving us a two nil interval lead. We had a young and inexperienced goalkeeper Dilwyn John making a return to the side, replacing veteran Welsh international Graham Vernacombe, that night, and I recall him making a number of howlers, as Norwich clawed his way back into the game, scoring four second half goals. As a young kid, it was the first time that I had endured a "Cardiff City Experience", one that was to become a normality over the coming decades! 24 Aug 1963 Cardiff City v Norwich City 3-1 League Division Two This game was remembered for the debut of John Charles for Cardiff City, who duly obliged the star struck crowd with a wonder goal. It was a hot, very sunny day, and "King John" hit a hopeful 70 yard free kick into the Norwich penalty area, which bounced over the head of keeper Kevin Keelan. Ivor Allchurch also scored that day.
Excellent thread there fella, though I wish you hadn't mentioned Tony Warner........... Lot of time and effort in putting that together for your fellow posters and us alike.
Sensational once again, KIO. Your match day threads are becoming as integral to the weekend as the football itself
You really excel with your match day threads KIO and it must take quite a bit of time to put together!!!
I actually composed this one last Sunday and just added the graphics, pics and team news last night before posting. Might struggle to put one up on Tuesday though, (Oooh Matron !) as I do have a day job and you're right, they can take a couple of hours or so sometimes to put together. I'll do my best mind P.S. Just added link to Live Stream in my OP for the game courtesy of canarydave
Looks like the Cardiff not606 board is quite lively so hopefully a lot of your boys will pop over this afternoon mate, unless of course you have your own matchday threads ?
Well thanks for the invite KIO, but I wont be over here during the game - looking forward to it at the CCS and to be honest, that'll apply to a lot of our posters who are regulars on the forum. If it were an away game, our board tends to be far more populated. For those that are living away or just can't get to the CCS through work or for other personal reasons, we don't have such a sophisticated matchday thread as yours. Someone normally puts up a reference to the game (maybe even an existing one) and the lads all jump on that. Nice threrad though fella - hope some of our lads join in. I'll certainly pop across with some observations when I get back in - about a 27 mile trip for me.
Ruddy; Martin (c), Turner, Hooiveld, Olsson; Tettey, Johnson; Lafferty, Hoolahan, Redmond; Grabban. Bench: Rudd (GK), Whittaker, Jerome, Garrido, Josh Murphy, O'Neil, Odjidja. Vs Marshall, Brayford, Fabio, Connolly, Morrison, Ralls, Whittingham, Gunnarsson, Pilkington, Jones, Macheda. Moore, Cala, Le Fondre, John, Adeyemi, Daehli, Maynard. Pleasingly they've got 4-4-2 by the looks of it, so we should stand a chance in the middle of the park. Of the ex-canaries, Pilks and Marshall play, Adeyemi on the bench.
