Former Leeds United winger Harold Williams has sadly died today (September 12th) just a few months after celebrating his 90th birthday. The nippy winger celebrated his 90th birthday in June and he was the oldest living Welsh international footballer until his death today. Williams was snapped up by Leeds after impressing against the side in an FA Cup tie at Elland Road for Newport County in January 1949. The Welshman, who represented his country on four occasions, signed for Leeds the following summer in a deal worth £12,000 that saw Roly Depear go in the opposite direction. Williams joined fellow Welshman John Charles at Elland Road and he proved the main creator for the giant centre forward. The diminutive winger made 228 appearances for Leeds during his time at Elland Road scoring 35 goals between 1949 and 1957. He returned to former club Newport in 1957 but it wasn`t long before he returned to Yorkshire when he signed for Bradford Park Avenue. Williams eventually retired but he stayed in the area and he ran The Griffin Hotel in the village of Gildersome near Morley before ending his days in a care home in Beeston, just a stone`s throw away from Elland Road.
