Personally, I hope that we are sold and to a fabulously wealthy Sheikh, £ity-style. Let's face it, lads, we simply are never going to be able to compete for top honours without that kind of injection of cash. It is a romantic fantasy to believe that we can match the likes of 'Pool, United, £ity and Chavs on the field unless we are also able to match them at the bank. It'd not so much the ability to be able to pay the cash to buy the best players, rather the ability to pay the wages to keep the best ones. Our being up for sale will be the very last thing the Gooners will want to hear, which is an added bonus.
The club has issued a statement that basically denies this whole thing, saying that there are no talks going on and that the press have misinterpreted stadium related business as moves towards a sale. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/new-stadium-development-clarification-110914/
Perhaps the club should have a "three strikes and you're out" policy on attending press conferences etc for newspapers who feel compelled to produce such silliness.
Nope. If I wanted to see my team win every year and by buying up all the best talent I'd be a Real Madrid fan, or Chelsea if I wanted to go to games. For me there's far more to supporting a club than trophies and success and it's not something I'd like to see forced through by becoming one of the clubs that are making elite football ****. In all honesty, I'd be devastated because I wouldn't feel able to support them anymore. I'd buy a Brentford season ticket and have Spurs as my second club that I just keep an eye on. This story is nothing though, desperate to sell and an inflated value don't go hand in hand.
The club I have most respect for is Borussia Dortmund and while we are similar (to an extent) in terms of trying to be a success under our means, our means are set upon us, by our owners (even though they are incredibly rich) Dortmund (unless I'm wrong) aren't backed by billionaires and instead have built their club up in a professional manner, with a fantastic stadium, great support, good youth system and they have a technical team that works closely with the manager and overall Dortmund are the type of club I view as being a great club. Obviously its easier for them to get into the champions league and win trophies as they play in a weakened league for which Bayern and Dortmund will dominate if on form, yet winning trophies on the back of having a billionaire and outspending your rivals, isn't something I would hope for. Instead what I would like to see (which won't happen) is for Lewis to loosen the restrictions (if he had the passion) but unfortunately he doesn't as our net spend (As we know) is something we're known for and even if we loosened our restrictions, we wouldn't be spending the amount our rivals are, yet we would increase our chances of success.
Spurs to play next season online Tickled me a little. Shame the author had a good idea but a ****e writing style.
Totally agree about Dortmund, Boss. I read somewhere that German sides have a slight commercial advantage on sponsorships and the like because of the global success of local companies, but they're still very well run. They've made a massive change over the last decade or so, as they were in deep **** financially and massively overspending. I suspect that we've taken a look at how they're doing things and have made some attempt to emulate their way of thinking. The increased focus on both the youth team and signing players with potential, as well as the suggested kop end in one of the stadium plans all echo their club. It would be nice if we could get somewhere near to their success on the pitch, but they face less resistance than we do, I think.
OK guys... I've placed a bid to try buying the club... waiting for a response back. I've got big plans for Spurs... starting with a relocation to Milton Keynes. Then I will officially rename the club "Tottenham Hot Tigers" and change the club colours to magenta and cyan because those colours are more marketable to the fan base in Mexico that I'm hoping to establish.
Entertainment continues to be one of the best sectors of the world economy, sport is the flagship of entertainment, football is the biggest sport, the PL is the most popular league and Spurs are one of three "major" teams in London. As fictitious as the story is, $1 billion might not be such a bad price to pay for something that will probably continue to leap in value. Oddly enough, as expensive as it seems, the new stadium is more of a cosmetic than revenue-enhancing improvement. The real money no longer comes from real people watching games. These.
In 2013 28% of Spurs income (or just less than a third) came from Matchday tickets and concessions. It's not MOST of the money you make- but it is still a significant chunk of the total income. How do most fans become fans though? If you ask many people- it stemmed from being taken to a game by someone as a kid. So even though only 28% is from matchday... it builds fanbase and fanbase increases income from sponsorship, etc.
It would also allow us to sell the naming rights without everyone kicking off about it and probably get more money from it, too.
But if you look at the clubs earning far, far more money than us then you're looking at other areas of revenue making the real difference. The stadium would be an important step on the way to trying to narrow the gap, however, and more certain to get results too.
Not only do I not want us to be bought by a sugar daddy, I care about some things more than Spurs winning everything. I want us to play good football, and ideally to be good enough to play against and sometimes beat the best, but just as importantly to contribute positively to our local community, to provide opportunities to local kids, to be loyal to our academy and help them into fulfilling professional careers even if they're not going to make it at Spurs, and to be a fair employer to all our many staff who aren't earning multiple thousands of pounds per week.
Oh, come on, TMT! Are you trying to tell me that, should we be bought by an oil-sheikh and rebuilt along the lines of £ity, paying the kinds of wages that will buy us world class players in every position all over the park, making us title-winning contenders each and ever season, you wouldn't expect any reaction from Gooners? Please tell me you're kidding!
You have a good point in that I said that the gate isn’t real money. It still is, that’s true. But it’s a piece of the revenue pie that has done nothing but shrink, and will continue to. Man U gets big money for kit deals and endorsements because of the huge world markets it draws more and more of its revenue from. The trips that people in these markets make to see games live in Manchester account for very little of the money they put into the club. That comes from cable packages, Man U merchandise, and Adidas, who believe, probably correctly, that hundreds of millions paid to provide Man U with kits will end up benefitting sales. Liverpool fans in Liverpool become fans to a considerable degree by going to games. Liverpool fans in Shanghai, not so much. While having a big, shiny stadium will significantly increase Spurs’ game day revenue, it’s even more important to help make the club more attractive to viewers around the world on television and computer, who seem to be impressed, like magpies, by bright, shiny objects. I’m not wild about the commodification of everything either, incidentally, but the only alternatives, revolution and/or some form of cooperative world government involving a revaluation of everything, don't exactly seem around the corner--though it is always darkest before the dawn, they say.
I don't think any arsenal fans give a flying **** tbh I reckon even with very wealthy owners it'd take years to get you to the point your imagining, especially with FFP. Also arsenal are in a very good financial position at the moment and FFP makes us look even better. I think a lot of us finally feel we are able to compete with the big spenders, so spurs joining that table wouldn't be the big deal it was when Chelsea or city did it.
That can be good or bad depending on who the consortium are. I'm happy with our FSG. H&G were a nightmare though.
