Jonas Gutierrez has a year left on his contract and wants to know what the future holds for him after being frozen out at Newcastle United

Jonas Gutierrez is intending to head back to Tyneside for showdown talks with Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew.

The Chronicle understands that the 31-year-old winger wants a sit down with club officials to discuss the final 10 months of his contract.

The fact that Gutierrez is costing Newcastle around £40,000-per-week to train alone in his home country will also not be lost on Toon owner Mike Ashley.

Pardew sanctioned the decision to let Gutierrez train in Argentina and search for a club this summer but the former Real Mallorca man has been unable to land a deal anywhere in world football despite moves by his representatives to find him a new club.

United managing director Lee Charnley just beat the transfer deadline to find Hatem Ben Arfa a new home in Hull City when he agreed to spend the remainder of his Toon contract at the KC Stadium.

But failure to move Gutierrez on could cost Ashley a cool £1.6million in wages if the winger continues to be left to his own devices in Argentina.

With Charnley and financial director John Irving eager to make sure that the club keep a tight rein on costs the man with 22 caps for Argentina will be looked at as an expensive drain on the club’s finances.

Options for Jonas could include paying the winger off or loaning him to a Championship club with the Football League’s emergency window now open for business. United have not confirmed whether Gutierrez’s contract contains a clause that will trigger an extension to his current deal.

That was cited as one of the reasons that resulted in Gutierrez’s loan move to Norwich City last January, according to some reports.

It is also believed that Gus Poyet was also interested in taking Gutierrez on loan at Sunderland at the start of the year but that move failed to materialise and he joined his ex-boss Chris Hughton before the former Newcastle manager was sacked at Carrow Road.

Back then Gutierrez said: “The manager told me in December I was not going to play any more and told me to find myself another club.

“I don’t know why it happened and I still don’t understand what I did wrong.

“There were no rows with Alan Pardew or anything like that. He just said I needed to leave and that was that.

“I honestly don’t know why I wasn’t playing, you will have to ask the manager that. He just made his decision and that was it.

“Something must have happened – but I don’t know what.”

Gutierrez’s return may now leave Newcastle with a similar situation to the Ben Arfa scenario earlier this summer when he was banished to the reserves. The South American could be relegated to the second string and go through the same process as Shane Ferguson and the Frenchman.

However, in recent weeks Northern Ireland international Ferguson has moved slightly up the pecking order and was in Newcastle’s squad to face Crystal Palace. But it appears a long way back for Gutierrez. The player signed for United in 2008 and has made 177 league appearances, scoring 10 times.

There must something to this than we are not aware of, but surely Jonas must know? If not its poor by Pardew. Unlike the HBA situ which there is clear reasoning, just not wanting a player is not a reason to freeze him out of first team training etc. Jonas has always acted professionally. Its a shame at 31 he asn't been able to find a club. Obviously his wages are high but I assume he wants to play.

if it is just the contract thing I'd sit him down and basically say... let's agree to remove the clause... get you back in the squad... and therefore the shop window and it will help the club short term and you longer term.

The bottom line is we are stronger with him in the squad than without.

Maybe any clause is to do with Mallorca though?

Even it if is there's a deal to be done in every situation.
For example I'd say to Jonas... take a £5k a week paycut..... play.... get a better move... then go to Mallorca and say 'you get nothing right now'... but here's £250k to waive the clause. That way Jonas effectively part pays to get rid of the clause... sacrificing some £££ short term but it increases his chances of a better move and bigger contract next time as he will be in the shop window. Right now no one will take a risk on him as he simply hasn't played. A sitaution which helps no one.

As you say it should be possible to negotiate the clause away with either him or his previous club. He could actually provide some competition at left back (I seem to remember he played there for Argentina).
Otherwise offer him a lump sum payment of 800K to end his contract. I am sure that would suit both parties and he could then at least get some footy played.

Its true but it makes me laugh that we have three left backs in Haidara, Dummett and Santon (probably a right back really), and they are so good we consider a player who has played as a winger most of his career. The transfer policy of our club is so warped. I do think we have a problem at left back, I don't rate any of them. I know people like Haidara and he is young enough to learn but he is suspect defensively.

Then again I don't think its particularly professonal to carry a spiderman mask in your sock. I'd like to retract this earlier statement and say I'm fully beind Pards (oo er) on this matter.

Just to note my body is currently a temple of lean muscle following months of hard work. The missus actually just watches me train now, waiting for the glisten of perspiration against my taut physique. #like a Jilly Cooper novel

    <laugh> hahahahahahahaha

But on a serious note. We need numbers, why the **** isn't Gutierrez in the country and at least amongst the subs? He may be quite useless at crossing, passing over 10 yards and shooting, but that's literally ten times better than what we've seen from the guys getting games <laugh>

    <ok>

I mean, I understand that they regret giving this guy a contract for £40,000 a week, but if you're paying him, use him? But no... You go sun yourself in Argentina mate... We're doing fine with a paper-thin squad, half of which now has very little premier league experience <doh>

He should be training with the club but I don't think we can consider him an option for the first team (contractual clauses aside). His legs went a couple of years ago and I just don't see a role for him in the squad. I should imagine we could find him a home in the Championship if we could convince a club to pay a quarter of his wages.

At the current injury rate, we'll be calling him back into the team soon. I'd like to think he's no longer good enough for the team, but there's no need to freeze him out like this. While there are better players around, at least with Jonas you know he'd always give everything he could, even if it was frustrating to watch.

You have to wonder why our club has a bunch of playyers on its books who have been frozen out. What's going on?

Jonas used to be Pards favourite player, than one summer he just vanishes.
