I think maybe 3 might still be tories? ok maybe 4 if they work in the oil business. You are right but i think the right in soctland in SNP and so forth so i wonder which would gt in power first?
In case you hadn't noticed the Scots have their own devolved parliament as well as sending 59 MPs to Westminster who have voting rights on English only legislation! I would say that Scotland is vastly over represented within the UK given the size of it's population! And for Salmond to say that the Tories will privatise the Scottish NHS when in fact the NHS is devolved on Scotland is just a plain lie!
I think personally its high time that westminister was reduced in numbers and regional parliments work for local areas along the lines of what nozzer said about germany.... north england fro noth engladn, socts for themselves, wlesh for wales and Ni for arguing with themselves... then have a reduced number MR system and abolish the house of lords. you can have regional parliments at the same level of power as the federal parliment in terms of checks and balanced then... Ie put oversight of going son in federal parliment, law making over all and have regional vetting of said laws... as in no veto but requires some passing system
Where do you want to draw the boundaries? With you being an Arsenal supporter, you would want to exclude Chelsea from your city!!!
If it was done with proportional representation that's not a bad idea. I wouldn't get rid of the House of Lords though, I'd just change the way it works, the vast majority of them have far more real life knowledge than our mp's do.
The question of a devolved parliament for English matters exists in academia... EDIT: The 'West Lothian question' for anyone interested. The current first past the post system for Parliament has made it extremely hard for extremist parties so has its merits and may do more so in the future what with the rise of Islam. The House of Lords is an extremely valuable chamber if you actually look at the role it plays. It is very unique. The reforms started by Blair will eventually see hereditary peers gone. It is different to the US senate for example but its a valuable body of expertise. Really devolution has given us a federal-like system - apart from in England.
Really sad when people´s jobs depend of producing weapons of mass destruction!! Couldn´t the Tories have devised a more productive way to employ people. Oh, I forgot! They destroyed the productive side of the economy back in the Reign of Queen Margaret so now we have to import our engineering products from elsewhere!!
I like British style first past the post. Partly because you vote for individuals not a party. I never vote based on party but what an individual believes. You lose democracy with proportional vote seats because a party tells you who is going to represent you. American fptp is corrupt though. It is institutionalised to only allow 2 parties to compete. Only things I don't like about Britain. 1) house of Lords 2) don't directly elect head of state.
Our first past the post system means that millions of people go unrepresented. A vote for an individual should be for a local position and proportional rep should be used for countrywide govt.
First past the post does not prevent people from voting for parties rather than individuals - so that myth is exploded! There are proportional electoral systems that do allow voters to indicate candidate preference - but they do tend to be unwieldy!
I'd propose a system of local first past the post govt. with proportional representation for our overall govt. not crappy av but actually proportional representation where the % of the votes = the amount of seats. Where to draw up the regional boundaries would be the most difficult thing to decide I'd imagine. This results in the individual people believe in most representing you on a local stage while on overall policy decisions are made with the vast majority of people's views represented. This eliminates the current situation where a million or more people can be ignored due to not having a large collective of voters living in the same post code. While I get that it results in more coalition governments it might end this stupid "do whatever we can to beat the <insert Tory or labour depending on preference> Regardless of what we think and maintain the status quo of elite out of touch politicians"
Its not a myth. Some people vote for person. Some for party. Fptp gives me the right to democratically elect (or at least vote for) an individual to represent me rather than a party. A sortocracy is always going to represent the will of the people more than a democracy though. Unfortunately that form of govt died with the Greeks. My ideal government: I'd propose two legislative bodies. One with moderately long term election cycles taken by vote. First Past the post (individuals can belong to party but party not listed on ballot slip). The other by sorti from volunteers that is re selected on an annual basis. And of course a weak executive leader with limited powers chosen by direct vote.
