Actually I first came across Ãthelflæd by reading Bernard Cornwell's Warrior Chronicles which are set in Saxon England during and after Alfred's reign. Largely true to history too. It's true what breconsaint says, though, Edward played his part but Cornwell (and Michael Wood in the documentary Fran mentions) both had a bit of a thing for Ãthelflæd. The books are highly recommended too. The first one is called The Last Kingdom. The iPad keyboard allows the direct typing of the "ash" (æ) which is handy in discussions of this sort.
That's good. I know the Linux and Windows keyboards can quickly access those letters from Ascii, but if the Apple can access it quicker then very good. I've used tablet PCs, including an iPad, and I just don't like the touchscreen keypads. Too small to touch-type, for me. Also, they're no good for some acoustic guitarists.
I used to download an Old English keyboard which I would access by switching on the toolbar, but this could be problematic when I forgot to change back and my "w"s became "ƿ"s etc. Now I just access this site when it's needed. (And yes, it IS needed sometimes) http://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/english.htm Good for Greek too! άριστη !
Gwenhwyfar(Welsh), or in mediaeval French, Guinevere = Jennifer. Depends- would you rather be named after Arthur's queen or an old car? (Actually, the historical Genevieve defended Paris against Attila the Hun- so somewhat more impressive than the legendary British adulteress).
Generally, to be a successful medieval king, you had to be a horrible, bloodthirsty ****. A trait far more common among men than women.
In the programme I watched, Ãthelflæd (although willing to go to battle) tried to do things by consensus and compromise...rare in that period I would think. As for how ruthless people were then, it is always difficult to judge from the distance of time...we don't live in constant fear for our families which they did then.
Still learning to drive my ipad...getting used to it. Please don't confuse me with different key boards must learn to drive this one first. As for Bernard Cornwell...he is a favourite author of mine. I too would recommend The Warrior chronicles....The last kingdom....The pale horseman...the Lords of the north. All a very good fictional read based on history.
She didn't compromise much with the Danes I get your point though. As a woman, and a "foreigner" from Wessex, she would have had to use diplomatic skills instead of cowing her followers with a big sword and an "acceptable" pedigree. Then again, with regard to diplomatic skills and man management, her father wasn't exactly lacking in that department.
Well, just drive and chaperone then, leaving me and Minogue to our thing! I really like the way you focused on that and not Kylie not being interested
It was a while ago that I was posting about the new kit and quality problems, but I've had excellent dealings with the club and just in case you wanted to know, they are addressing quality issues with the manufacturer and will be sending a new set of kit out for my son once the new batch has been delivered. Very good customer service overall.
Hmmmm the Foo Fighters are playing a secret club show in Brighton, possibly tonight. I need to put my Sherlock deerstalker on methinks..... EDIT - it's tomorrow.
