Its because I feel we have too many players "who could come good" thats why I'm so negative about Baldini and our overall squad and yes I may be a tad harsh! Just I don't like this Dof/Coach system and would rather Avb & Pochettino (even though I didn't/don't rate either) where/are allowed to sign players, without working with a Dof. I'm just Old Skool in that respect and prefer to see managers given freedom. But yes I accept its difficult for us to make signings that we all hope for, yet that opens up a new debate on the restrictions of ENIC/Levy!
He is not financially naive at all but I doubt he knows how much a certain player is really worth. If I was the Chairman I would want my DoF/Coach to give me a monthly update on player values which I would monitor against any offers the club had. If we were doing that a few years back someone must have been seriously over-valuing Bentley! But then again they would have been seriously under-valuing Bale
Its not about if I believe they are up to the job as if it was my decision, neither would have been hired but if Levy viewed AVB and Pochettino as the right men to take us forward then they should be allowed to sign the players (within the budget agreed) that best suits their style and thats only possible if the manager has freedom, or has an outstanding relationship with the DOF. I've never been a fan of the DOF/Coach system and remember our best four years of premier league/champions league football was when we had no DOF. Avb's record point total was when we had no DOF and Sherwoods win ratio was when he dropped most of the players the DOF signed (with the previous manager)!
And the same four years had a much worse record for signing players who turned out well. If we had never signed Carrick, Berbatov, Bale and Modric we would be well over £100m worse off in terms of our squad value and would nver have got into the CL at all.
I always thought they where a good team as Levy acted as a DOF but never had an opinion to stop the signing of players like Crouch, Bassong, Defoe etc and a real DOF may have caused issues and stopped us signing such players who in the end helped us to 4th and the champions league. Plus Redlkapp had a head scout and team who where responsible for most signings and found players such as Sandro.
Then Levy got understandably distracted by the whole stadium issue and his family problems (mother dying, for example) and realised that he couldn't continue to do everything. Having someone do the part of his job that he was probably least suited to and concentrating on the business side seems like a good decision to me.
In terms of a footballing sense, they turned out very well. Thats why we follow football, for memories of the team/enjoyment and feeling proud of the team. I'm sure you wouldn't want to have had a Levy era without the Redknapp years, even if it ended on a sour note, unless you get some weird kick out of our impressive net spend!
Levy negotiated the contracts - that is only a small part of the DoF role. Someone needs to identify the talent - that is a full time job and is more than being a chief scout. IMHO players are more similar than managers would have you believe. The money that is wasted by churning so many players around is ridiculous.
Of course not, but my point is that the money Redknapp spent on the players you mention was generated by the profits on Carrick and Berbatov. We've had none of that sort of gain for five years now so the new coach doesn't have that facility available to him
Yes I understand that Power but if you look at our system, the DOF is essentially a talent spotter (for the future) a good DOF also has to posses the right judgement to sign players that are ready to fit into the managers plans for the coming season (or season in hand) and if you look at the players signed that have been an immediate success, the ones who gave us most value (in terms of performance) where the players Redknapp signed. Even Verts was on his way when Redknapp was in the process of being sacked and LLoris (who is now viewed as our leading player by many) was signed when we had no DOF. So to balance it up, Baldini should be fired. Pochettino should be left alone but if Baldini stays then it means the chances are we will be looking for a new manager sooner then if Pochettino was allowed to manage without a DOF, although Pochettino won't last anyway so we may as-well fire both!
Many things are done for accounting purposes. But I would bet that Levy is more than aware if player values.
Where do you get the impression that the DoF's job is to sign the best available players for the coming season, Boss? That would be ludicrously short-sighted and leave us with a bunch of players in their late 20's with no sell-on value. Might be good for a season, though it might not, but then we'd be screwed in the long term. We can't afford to buy the best players around at their peek. We have to plan differently and buy potential. There's no way around that.
I missed out "also", although I did earlier state the DOF's job is to sign players not just for the future, but also for the coming season, its about the balance and thats why im emphasising that our best signings for the immediate season in hand and goals have been when we haven't had a DOF.
How I see it--along with the proviso that our results should be judged against our peers. IMO early indications are fairly good rather than very good, fair or poor. But they're certainly preliminary. It's easy to stick when you should twist, and vice versa. But Spurs have tended in the last few years to overtwist, rather than overstick.
Rose not good enough for us?,so we are better than England?,i don't think so,even now while England are having a lean time
According to Radio 4's More or Less this place: http://www.football-observatory.com/?lang=en Has an algorithm that will give a value for a footballer once you enter in their position, league games played, international caps and who for, years on contract, and loads of other factors. The guy they interviewed says that their system accounts for 80% of the variance in transfer fees. Of course the other 20% is normally pretty important and will include factors such as off-field behaviour, fallings-out with managers/team-mates, inability to get into current team, financial health of buying/selling club or many other factors that have impacts on transfer fees. Thought it sounded interesting but they don't have lists of players there - just a load of drop-down menus you can enter and they'll email you a value (?). So there are people out there at least trying to create objective estimates of player values. Not that it means much when you're talking about Levy, I guess.
Though of course (and I don't want to go on and on about the Harry years quite as much as Boss and I understand that Harry did also inherit the fruits of previous DoF purchases in Bale and Modric) Harry did exactly that in bringing in Crouch, Defoe, Kaboul, Friedel, Adebayor, Parker...* I think we can too easily dismiss our chances of buying proven Prem experience. It's not easy but every year there are a good few players who did not fit in somewhere who go for a relative song to a premiership rival. There are even some, like Anelka, who mysteriously hang around middle-table teams for a while, despite being proven at every level then head to Chelsea towards the end of their career. How much was Remy? Who knows - maybe in a year or so's time we'll say "How much for Wellbeck - an England international and experienced EPL and CL player?". * Though can we remember for once that during Harry's reign we also signed Sandro and Walker among others.
