    You must have laid a hundred nits from the excitement. Thing is we ceased having wardens in the new world some time ago. The analogy (and its irony) stands however.

    Actually Livtor is correct- in North America traffic lights walk around and give tickets to people whose parking meter has expired. What really stinks is when two or more of them are walking next to each other and one says red and the other says green.

    Indeed I got a parking fine off one of those traffic lights <grr> not sure 8f it was the green man or the red man who issued it though.

    Going to help you out here Liv...our traffic wardens dont 'direct' traffic. They go around giving tickets to illegally parked cars for the most part.

    So the comparison does work.

    But they call people that walk around giving parking tickets traffic Wardens in America too! Sometimes "meter maid" or "meter reader"- but Traffic Warden is a perfectly acceptable term here and probably the most commonly used one. Canada normally sits between the US and the UK in terms of words used but I'd be surprised if they don't use the term "Traffic Warden" or at least understand it.

    Perfect example of why his tone hinders engagement. He just assumed you were wrong rather than there may a distinct difference in definitions of "traffic warden"

    A less sarky response would have got him the explanation just as quick without the danger of rubbing yet another person up the wrong way for no reason......shame.
