For a number of seasons now we've gone in to the season with a standout "star" player.. With the departure of Suarez and with Gerrard being in the twilight of his career it does feel as if this term we are more of a team consisting of very good players with a massive scope for improvement. I've seen a lot of terms banded around the last few weeks, specifically the term 'most important player' (often attached to Henderson), but, who is actually our best player? My own definition of best is a combination of talent, impact and importance. With this is mind, who in our squad currently best fits that criteria. Sturridge being the more obvious choice, very talented and his goal scoring record since joining us is literally second to none. Henderson? As said previously, often branded as being our most important player, due to his incredible athleticism and overall impact on the team. How about Sterling? Arguably has been out best player since the turn of the year, even when including Suarez.. And he's get even better, while still only 19 you could argue he is our most talented player. Thoughts? I would say our best player in terms of ability and threat is Sterling, but most important would have to be Hendo as shown by what happened when he was suspended last season at the end. Everything can change due to the amount of signings we have made though, this time next year we could be saying Balotelli, Markovic or Moreno are our best players. Who knows!
It's far too early to even start thinking about who might be our best player this season. Equally it is merely academic to debate who was our best player last season. In truth, whoever it is will become more apparent as the season progresses.
I haboured high hopes for Coutinho this year but I firmly believe Sterling will be our most important (therefore best?) player this season.
Best player right is generally the most creative, attacking one who also scores a lot (but might not be the top scorer), the number 7s and 9s of this world. Or, as it is in the modern game, your number 31. It bothers me that Lambert is our current number 9 incumbent and that we don't even have a number 7 now Most important player is different - he's not the one who's going to get you all tingly on the edge of your seat - could be a midfield dynamo like Hendo or a big tackling centre back who's like a brick wall. They don't make you see the world differently after running the length of the pitch or a perfectly timed header/sliding tackle but they're hella importante.

In my opinion that has been the point of this summers buys. Previously this question would have been immediately answered with a Torres, a Gerrard or Suarez (and yes maybe Hendo in hindsight last year). As Dave says only time will tell but I'm hoping by the end of this year you have a situation where if someone is out someone comes in relatively seamlessly with regards to results on pitch. Gerrard » Can Coutinho» Lallana Sterling » Markovic Etc etc...some are obviously weaker than others but nowhere near like last year. Team is the star!
Finally we won't be in the situation where we have to say: 'for **** sake, <insert **** players name> is coming on'
