Before he joined us he was vice captain and a key player in a team which finished 5th-7th (can't remember) in the Spanish top flight and in my and others opinion didn't let us down....I don't think anyone is claiming he was the finished article, just that a player like that usually has a market value higher than £0 <ok>

When players have that wild, uncontrollable streak likeLeon Knight, Joey Barton, Balotelli it's best they leave.

You're probably right but it's usually best if you don't telegraph this information to all and sundry, that is if you'd like to receive some money for the wild man :)

But Balotelli is world class, Canas isn't close.

Wish we'd have got something for him but Monk clearly had the knives out for him and wanted rid. We just have to wish him well and move on.

All well and good but what happens when another player has a case of the grumps?

He asked to leave and we were unable to sell him. No club at all came in for him despite his agent working overtime to get him a deal. Absolutely no one was interested if a fee was involved.

We had a choice to make, either keep (and pay) an unhappy player with little chance of playing an active part in our season; nothing to do with Monk, its simply that he isn't good enough for the bench given our current squad.

We couldn't sell him for peanuts but we still would have had to pay his salary (at least £10k a week?) so consenting to release him from his contract is better for us than not.

Its possible people wasnt too fussed on paying a fee after canas refusing to sign a new contract at Betis which led to us getting him on a free, surely he was worth a couple of mill being the captain in Villa Real and im sure all the other spanish clubs knew what went on there. Maybe he never searched too hard for a club knowing his contract would be terminated anyway, wouldnt that normally give him a better signing on payment.

Absolutamente! And would have had much sympathy for the club? Doubt it.

We got his wages freed up and off the books as he was surplus to requirements. there was nobody ready to pay so he had to go for free... everyone's a winner...

Even if it didnt cost us money straight up getting his contract cancelled then signing up as a free agent must have got him a signing on bonus which probably would have been used to buy him otherwise.

No team on the entire planet was willing to spend a penny to buy him, that gentlemen says it all. Espanyol now they are taking a big risk with a player like him, every professional club in the world knows he is a trouble maker and doesn't play for the shirt.

If he was to just play his game and cut out the nonsense then he could be a good player. I have seen some good stuff from him but not enough for monk to make him a squad player. I hope he does better with his new club but at least we are not going to pay his wages for not playing ....
