Personally I'm not that convinced with Cody.. To some people he is seen as the Messiah returning to Gills, but honestly I do not think he's anything special.. Especially this season I think that both Kedwell and McDonald have become to comfortable as number one strikers for the Gills, and I think that Norris and Dickenson look more like League 1 strikers! I think that lately McDonald has become lazy and he doesn't move between the channel of the 6 yard box and penalty box, which makes it increasingly difficult for players like Dack and McGlashen to even create chances... So really I am not convinced
Absolutely agree...this really is not Cody bashing and maybe PT has given him different instructions but his absence in the box is clearly evident from previous season, he certainly no longer appears to be hassling the keeper. I said against Crewe i want to see Norris come on, this is not favouring one over another but just saying lets see what is on offer. Cody like you say is to me like MA was a messiah...until they fall on their sword. I'm more than happy to support Cody but i will not treat him as the one and only option with others waiting in the wings. Also a point i would like to pick up on, Crewe were there for the taking but we played safe, why not rest Cody for this game and then bring him back for the tougher games away...sometimes we fall down on our own logic if we think he is that good.
I wasn`t at the game, and couldn`t listen as I was at Legoland with the Family. It was nice to come home and find out that Gills have won,and kept a clean sheet. It does look like we more than deserved the win against a struggling side.I have seen the highlights and Dack`s goal was a great curler, and Cody did well to see his goal through.Really poor defending from Crewe though. It was good to see us passing the ball around well in the five minute highlights.Seven points from a possible twelve, and a cup win at Yeovil, and also playing Newcastle. We can be pleased with our start to the season. Also it was good to finally end our poor home run against Crewe!
Your right Cody isn't very good, he's only managing a goal every other game in the time he's been with us and this season he's only got 2 goals from 2 starts. The sooner we get rid and bring back Oli the better.
who said Cody was not very good?...in the politest sense, it just seems sometimes that people can't hold opinions against a favoured player. We all wonder what is wrong with English football and this is precisely the problem. It's a bit like dropping Jimmy Greaves for the world cup and playing Hurst
OK. it doesn't actually say he isn't very good but equally I haven't seen anyone refer to him as the "messiah" (apart from in a sarcastic way)he's a league 1 striker and scoring goals not the best striker in the world but then if he was would he be league 1.
It is strange to explain, but despite the goals I always feel Cody can give more, that he is holding something back. You look at Kedwell and he runs his heart out every game, he may not be as technically gifted as Codybut you feel he is playing to his limits, where as Cody seems to coast around not looking 100% bothered. I will never criticise a player for not being good enough, becuase we can't all be world beaters, as long as they look like they are giving 100% but Cody annoys me because he looks like he has more to give...
The thing that is a tad annoying about Cody is his 1 on 1 record against goalkeepers, he makes it through the oppositions backline consistently from match to match and would be a regular starting championship striker if he was a bit more ruthless. As above it's not Cody bashing, his running of the channels is very nice and I believe that his strength has improved since his first spell with us (as shown by his goal and penalty win at Stadium MK) but it is frustrating that he is striking it at the keeper so often.
My point exactly gillslad69, "he would be a regular starter in the championship" we are only in league 1.
I think the emphasis is on the 'would be'...but he never made it at Norwich or Coventry if memory serves me correct, other than a bench warmer, hence why he is with us. Just saying.
Don't get me wrong, I still believe that Cody is a key player for us and my point above is exactly why he is with us. Glad to have him, he is going to score goals for us consistently throughout the season if he remains uninjured, I just feel that if his 1 on 1 finishing was on par with Simeon Jackson (when with us) he would be the complete package. As brb stated, I was just describing where he could be certainly not saying that he doesn't deserve a place in our starting eleven.
Just want to say that he was behind Grant Holt and Martin when he was at Norwich who were banging them in so only played like 7 sub appearances. At Coventry he was never played with a partner and then Leon Clarke was preferred to him and we all know that to get the best out of Cody, you need someone alongside him. At the end of the day though grumpy has hit the nail on the head, if he tucked away every chance he was given, do people really think he would be playing in League One for us?
I hope Cody never come on here, if he did he'd find a lot of unnapreciative and unrealistic people, really don't know what more he can do.
Whilst I can understand your line of reasoning - why stop at Cody 'bashing'. You were with the rest of the 288 Gills fans at Barnsley to witness absolute rubbish from everyone in the side. It has been said that Cody has been most effective when he had Bayo alongside. Cody is no different to a lot of strikers who feed off a target man. He doesn't have that support in our side - because Kedwell often plays too deep when we might have an opportunity to play a longer ball - to the strikers who are still deployed in our half of the pitch. As a result Cody has to try to create openings for himself - perhaps too much of the time. I believe that this has resulted in Cody either 'rushing' his touch or taking an unnecessary extra touch to try to be 'certain' - only for the defence / goalkeeper to get into position. When he was with us a couple of years ago he scored 25 goals. Not too many people raised the point that he missed a hell of a lot of chances in that season. His goal ratio is good for a L1 striker - which is what he is - he is not the Messiah. Taylor needs to realise that with McGlashan in the side, we need for Cody & Kedwell to be close to each other in the penalty area - for the crosses that will come in. Both these should greatly profit (hopefully). -- those of you who were at Barnsley and MK Dons will remember that Gills conceded all the goals from crosses ( good crosses ) - it's about time we started to get in on the act.
Always surely you have heard me bemoaning Cody's chance to goals conversation rate, I am sure I have mentioned it before; just ask LeedsGill he can tell you I have been banging on about that for years!! I accept that he is good striker at this level but I don't think it is unrealistic to want to seem him play to his best/improve/score more goals. And fear not no player is safe from my criticism if I feel they deserve, and no doubt many will feel my sharp tongue, just remember my match review of the Barnsley game
BSG I agreed with ALL four letters of your Barnsley review. I accept your 'accusations' about Cody's conversion ratio. I probably agree with you. But given the goal/game/chance ratio for this season - which is 'not bad' - is it a case that Cody doesn't run around like a headless chicken - not chasing a lost cause - and thereby giving the impression that he's holding himself back. A couple of years ago I (privately) thought Cody was a little wasteful (despite 25 goals) - I was grateful however, that at least we were creating all those chances - and I would take more of the same this season.
Yes, kind of. There is something about his demeanour sometimes on the pitch that gives me the impression that is doesn't care. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is and maybe it is Taylor's tactics but it is the impression I get, so when he does miss chances it grates more than usual
