Ok folks, I thought that after enjoying the greatest wins, we could wallow in the worst defeats at which we were present. Mine include: 0-1 at Darlington in 1975 to go bottom of the old 4th Division with no goals and no points after 3 games. 1-2 at Kenilworth Road to miss out on promotion in 1964 (I cried during/after that game). 1-2 at Vicarage Road v. Liverpool in the 6th round Cup Replay - Rush's dive, Dalgleish's whinging to the ref. 0-1 home to L*t*n on boxing Day 1979 0-1 to Palarse at Wembley of course. 1-4 home to Notts County in the Cup in 1972 (they were 2 divisions below us at the time) 0-5 at Fulham on Boxing Day 2000 etc. etc. Just a thought......
0-3 at home to Yeovil was a bad one under Zola baring in mind the players we had.. 5-0 against Wimbledon in the Premier league?
Oh God that was awful. Mind the Fulham game mentioned above was just as bad. It seemed like it was minus 10 on that terracing.
5-1 against Derby soon after Zola took over, it was about 3-0 at half time and everyone started kickin off with each other in our end. I've hated Derby ever since.
Ok - usually I try to avoid choosing a recent game for these things (best or worse) as it reflects badly on my memory. However, the loss to leeds 2 seasons ago was the worst I shall ever experience - consider my day... Got great seat in URS at last minute, having decided I couldn't miss seeing us promoted. Travelled down from Cheshire on London midland - for 1215 ko. Train stopped at Nuneaton - terminated - lines down near rugby. Got taxi to Rugby. £70. Grabbed Virgin train to London (walk - on ticket £45) Fast local to Watford. arrived 1205, having had argument with conductor on whether I should be paying. (I paid) Taxi to ground - shared so cost reduced. Yippee. Into my seat just as they kicked off. Perfect ? And that my friends was as good as it got!! Thank heavens I was mad enough to come down again the following week for the glorious Leicester experience !! Perhaps, as my grandmother used to say 'It was all meant to be'
Most of the home games 71/72. My mate coined the word 'Skit'. It's the sound the ball makes hitting the back of the net. When the other lot score. You can hear it because there is no excited anticipatory noise from the crowd. Got used to it in the Rookery that season. 1-3 away at WBA 85/86 because that was the day I got a kicking. And then had to spend Christmas at my in-laws. Shucks. Losing to 0-1 at home to Wimbledon at home when they had just come up to Div 1. Same season? The 1-2 cup replay Liverpool that Vic cites.
4-0 away to Coventry in first premier league season, because I was there and in with the home support with my Coventry born wife and brother-in-law. Not good!!
I have witnessed a number of deeply depressing games and my physiatrist has advised me to try not to remember them through hypnosis in case the suicidal thoughts return!
February 1970 away to Carlisle on a freezing Tuesday night, lost 5-0, the heating on the coach broke down on the way home. To add the woes, Keith Eddy was taken off injured, as well as Colin Franks if I remember rightly - both out for a month or so. Their replacements for that period were Brian Owen and Mike Packer - so how we ever beat Liverpool two weeks later, I'll never understand.
Losing at home 0-3 to Barnsley in 2008 was as poor a performance as against Huddersfield last season. For a regularly rubbish fixture then Boxing Day takes some beating for me. I also remember a woeful 0-0 draw at Oxford Utd when the ref apparently couldn't tell the difference between our rather bright royal/Sorrento blue shorts and their navy almost black shorts so we had to wear their yellow shorts and socks along with our natty blue and silver striped shirts. The gas main leaked at Headington Bridge that day to add miles to the journey. Yes, we've had heavy defeats, frustrating defeats, ridiculous defeats but for sheer abject match day misery those above (Huddersfield and Barnsley) are my choices.
I was not there but I think the 2:1 defeat by Luton Town in 1982-3 was a bad result as the locals got Wilf Rostron sent off.
Wasn't that the season they had to wear our away kit at the Vic? Sorry if I''ve screwed a future pub quiz question for anyone!
Losing 4-1 at Shrewsbury in the Cup in the 90s. Also, there was a home defeat against Notts County (I think) which was a bad enough performance that my Dad threw his scarf in the kitchen bin when we got home - luckily, my Mum had emptied it just before we walked in!
Losing to Walthamstow Avenue in the FA Cup at home in 1952 was pretty bad for a small boy, and doesn't look too clever all those years later.
Some match in about 1972 - Torquay, I think - got home and vowed never to watch that rubbish again. Funnily enough, I don't think I have seen Torquay since then.
