I'd say depends on age and ownership as well.

call it bar manager, call it publican, all it owner etc... if you are talking 30 year olds yeah they move quick

Fair point MITO, but I still think they don't last as long as they used to. Both where my folks live, and down here, the publicans seem to be doing the Landlord/Landlady equivalent of musical chairs!

Does she keep having flings with the clientele?

  7. No, the first pub was a joint venture between her and her fella but they split up. He kept the pub and she got a new one. He couldn't run it so it closed anyway and hers got shutdown by the brewery due to lack of profits (not the best placed establishment). She got a third pub but its a bit further away.

Very few landlords own the freehold to the pubs they run.

Post the collapse of the local pub trade, after the smoking ban and the recession decimated it, venture capitalists bought many of the properties and lease them out to mug punters who think that running a pub is for them.

They entice them in with a relatively low cost start up costs (circa £50k) and initially sensibly priced beer, they then crank up the lease costs and the wet prices until the job is untenable and they fold. Leaving the VC's the chance to get another chunk of cash from the next unsuspecting mug. It's scandalous tbh.

The only way to make any money out the pub trade these days is to own the freehold and create a destination pub.

I keep telling you, saint. It's not ALL snails that are quick. Only the special ones. In box clear.

The Penny Ferry is now open again, so there's some competition again. Will hopefully keep some of the lowlifes out. The landlord is apparently a massive Red, which is good. However, it's too far for me to walk with my suspect knees. Way too many falling opportunities <laugh>

You could take a taxi. <ok>

There's some locals round here who take a taxi even if it's only just over a 5 min walk. Lazy Batards. At least you have a legitimate reason. Crazy, but an option all the same!

I think this is a nightly deal so a taxi could cost ore than rhc's weekly booze allowance no?

5min walk home should be no issue but it depends on safety too...

It really isn't worth it, mate. I've never liked the place, but they do have Sky. However, the beer is much better at the Grange and it's closer.

It's not 5 minutes, MITO. It's a good 15. **** all, I know, but the Cheese is 2 minutes and even that, as you know, has posed problems in the past, particularly with respect to the dwarf wall at the petrol station on the way back. At least there's grass on the other side, though <laugh>

Fair enough, matey. I'd go to the Grange, then, TBH. I'm guessing there's not as much drama there, though, so you'd need to go to The Cheese every so often to catch up on the real life soap opera there.
