Wellbeck has everything needed to succeed. In fact he has all the ingredients to be a World Class forward. Unlike Sanogo he has great technical ability. But he's also quick, tall, strong and covers a lot of ground. I'm certain he will give Giroud strong competition for a starting place.
Done deal Welbeck is a gooner. Might not be the player we wanted and not a player I particularly rate but time to get behind him and give him our support. We need him to step in and do a job so let's not get his confidence down too quickly!
Look, I'm sure he can be a solid player for us, if he plays up front anyway (on the wing I think he could be another gervinho) But one of the things that I used to back Wenger to the hilt with was the fact that he made cost effective decisions with his transfers, (i.e. profit risk etc.) Best case scenario I can see is that Welbeck plays like a 20 million player, and justifies his price tag (which again, if he plays up front he's got a chance of doing so). However, worst case, he plays like the 8 million bog standard player that we're so used to seeing, and is a complete flop (remember, he's not young anymore either) Now, imagine if we got Balotelli....Okay, he's a ****ing nutter, but we'd always have buyers for him if it didn't work out (and probably recoup a vast majority of our outlay). But if Wenger was able to work his magic on him, we would have a 40 million, world class player on our hands. Are you seriously trying to tell me that going for Welbeck was the better option? Of course not, until Giroud was injured there's no way in hell we would have gone in for him. His injury, combined with Sanogo being reminiscent of adebayor before he got good (i.e. big, quick, strong, makes the right runs but utter pony technically), forced his hand. It was a complete lack of foresight that led to us signing Welbeck for this inflated price, and I am really starting to question Wenger's methods now. Fingers crossed Welbeck proves me wrong and makes me look a muppet, but I can't really see it happening
Good signing, all things considered. Can play on the left as well as through the middle. Would actually play him on the left against the better sides, because he works his socks off and offers real defensive protection as well as real pace going forward. The likes of Cazorla,Ozil and Podolski are a joke when it comes to that aspect of the game. Fergie managed to get the best out of Welbeck, the question is can Wenger do the same?
Awful poll. A better question would be "is Welbeck the striker Arsenal needed?" The answer, a unanimous "no." Having needed a class striker to lead a title charge, Arsenal have instead upgraded Sanogo, a striker who's never scored a competitive goal. Brilliant.
So f**ing underwhelmed. Massively over-spend on an average (again) striker and seemingly don't even try to address the glaring weakness in defence, or horrible imbalance in midfield. We only have six defenders. Six. And one of those is Monreal who's...urgh. Another is a very promising kid who's now going to be under unbelievable pressure when called upon, which will be all the f**ing time. If we make it through the season without any problems at the back it will be down to blind luck, not good planning. Having no recognised third choice CB is ridiculous. Chambers is a RB who can do a job there. Even recognising that, a 19 year old who's never played there before should not be our no.1 back up! Only thing I'll say is happy we didn't get Falcao. Yes he's only six mil to loan but his wages mean having him for just one year will cost over 22 million. Ridiculous money.
Totally agree. Has been a poor end to an otherwise promising window. Poor planning yet again and not getting a CB is almost criminal.
I find it really bizarre that we couldn't get even one CB. In the meantime we got a CF that Wenger said we didnt need. Strange.
Ungrateful lot tbh. Welbeck and sanchez will have a great time at arsenal. Youve signed a top english striker and someone who fits in with your style. If his last club wasnt Manchester united, there would be few complaints.
I'm pretty sure we tried to get Nastasic but the deal feel through. Wenger tends to have a few targets if he can't land them we don't sign anyone.
Put it this way. At least welbeck is better than Sanogo and cannot be worse than when was playing at United
