I think that after a drink or two, 3+ hours of watching tennis, there is a logical reason why there were so many empty seats. ;)

Nice to see my man through.:emoticon-0100-smile

Two French TV journalists, Herve Ghesquiere and Stephane Taponier have been released from 18 months captivity in Afganistan. Every night on TV news their names have been shown along with the number of days that they have been held. They certainly do not forget people out here.

I don't know how many of you watch the Tour de France. Some do I know, but for those who don't it is well worth a look. Coupled with some exciting finishes there are fabulous pictures of the countryside.

As a sport it is far more technical than I realised when I first started to look at it. My first recollections go back to the terrible day that Tommy Simpson died near the summit of Mont Ventoux. When I moved over here I started to try and understand it more so that I could talk to my neighbour Bernard with some degree of knowledge. I was amazed that despite the French press having a downer on Lance Armstrong, Bernard always wanted him to win, simply because he was the best.

The coverage out here is extensive and some days has a different slant to the coverage in the UK. It starts this weekend and if anyone is interested I will try and give an Englishman's view of a very French event as often as possible. Maybe I can enthuse you with something that is new to you.

TRJ....that was something I had in mind. It might require quite a bit of work the way I was thinking about it, but if enough people were interested I would do my bit.

I would hope though that others would contribute, otherwise i could be talking to myself for a long time.:(

They don't forget fellow journo's, just like the BBC when one of their brethren was captured in Iraq - did not give the same sort of coverage to poor old Ken Bigley until the bastards sawed his head off....

w_y I think you are slightly unfair in saying the coverage was only due to the fact that they worked for TV. There has been some similar treatment of some aid workers that were captured. However I agree totally with your comments about Ken Bigley.

OFH - The BBC had wall to wall coverage when one of their hacks got lifted, documentary's, interviews with the family, specials at Xmas and on his birthday, newsnight specials etc - but for all the others their coverage virtually stopped a couple of weeks into their abduction. That is the truth, it started nagging at me and so I started to watch for it...

w_y, I think we are saying the same thing. My point was that everynight it was pointed out that they were still held. There were a lot of vigils etc when they had been held for a year, so the TV had managed to get the situation home to the man in the street. As you say, it is pointless to make a big issue of such an event, then let it drop off the radar.

What I had in mind Leo was to try and bring some of the facts about the Tour to those who had never bothered to watch it. A lot of the coverage from Channel Four has been good in that respect, but some days they only give brief highlights, whereas French TV tends to cover everyday in full. I wonder if I started a group would it only reach the few, while I would actually like more people to understand the race better.
