Any idea why LvG has been given ni on limitless funds to sign Di Maria, Falcao, etc Yet Moyes was given only Fellaini? Woodward negotiates your signings right? So surely last season was his fault that you landed no one? The fact that he has been allowed sign all these players is surely an acknowledgement that the squad was in terrible shape, yet Moyes is axed for finishing 7th. Would have been interesting to see what LvG could have done with an identical squad this season. I know Moyes is hardly the same draw as LvG, but have the performances of your squad this season made any of you see Moyes tenure in a different light?
Woodward appeared to be to blame last year. Perhaps this year he got his arse into gear to avoid the sack
Fergie choosing Moyes based on him being a fellow Glaswegian was the problem for Utd, trophy less Moyes succeeding a more or less guaranteed trophy a season manager with no European pedigree was always going to fail. No way would the uninspiring Moyes have attracted the players they've signed in this window.
Moyes and Woodward combined was an amateurish double act. £27million on Fellaini who had a £23million release clause. Jokers.
There is only one answer to your questions: The f**ing GGs are s**tting in their pants. Last summer when some of us said they had to revamp the squad and spend big, I don't think they truly believed a trcukload of money needed to be spent. They probably thought "we'll just add a defender and a midfeilder here and there and we'll get the show continuing". And in recruting a mean scottish git like SAF in Moyes, they thought we'll just contnue as usual: Win titles and play in the CL asa top club but spend like a medium mid table club. Whe they realised they were in deep s**t, the penny dropped that they had to spend really BIG. And because under FFP United have by far the biggest budget of any club, they realised they could and should do it. What's the alternative? spending time in mid table and seeing the value of sponsorship deals decrease and loss of revenue from declining global support. It is now panic stations. f**ing 2 -3 years too late but beter late than never. The spending will need to continue for a long time to come...They will do whatever it takes. Loss of share value does this to capitalists PS: recognising the squad was s**t. I said it in January and I blamed the players more than Moyes but no one would believe me. You could see it in matches and previously very good players were just not willing to put in the effort. I would have given Moyes more time but United could not afford to take the risk.
No he wouldn't, but he they signed no one, bar Fellaini. Im not saying that could have got Di Maria or Falcao last summer, but surely they should have been looking to improve their squad more than just Fellaini, given how much of a blatant rework was needed. They had targets, Fabregas for a start.....yet landed none of them. Surely this was Woodwards fault, not Moyes. So why was Moyes sacked for finishing 7th, when really the best you could expect someone who wasn't SAF to finish with the squad is maybe 6th or 5th at a push. Should Moyes have not been given the chance to spend some cash and build a team. Just seems unfair Moyes was told to make a title winning squad with just the addition of Fellaini, where as LvG gets given Di Maria, Falcao, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Blind etc
I actually rate Moyes as a manager to be fair. If you go back to 2012 you will find a post from me saying I wouldnt have minded giving him a crack at Chelsea when AVB was axed. Not sure I would say the same now to be honest, but thats because his career has been somewhat arse raped by Man United. His confidence has been destroyed. Gotta say though, I agree with the many United fans who said he was dire handling the press. Don't think he was ready for the increased media pressure that comes with managing a big club like United.
Life's a bitch at times. Maybe Moyes should have had more time, but combined with Woodward's pathetic attempts last August, I am surprised both didnt get the sack. Still unsure about Woodward, despite all the signings so far. Maybe we still have more to come before 11.00 pm
Have a feeling that because Moyes inherited a squad that had strolled to the title the year before, his assessment was that only minor areas needed to be addressed. Going into the 13/14 season he obviously knew of the midfield frailty, which was his key focus (as evidenced by the chasing of Fabregas, Thiago, Fellaini). Don't think he viewed any other positions (like defence) as necessities (maybe worthy of reinforcement but belief that experience of current crop would do the job for at least another year). I think going into the season he was disappointed (hence some subtle soundbites in interviews) only to have signed one player, but his intention was to probably sign 2, maximum 3. This is kind of why I feel Moyes is so worthy of his criticism. He was given advance notice of his role as manager, and had time to adequately assess and amend the club's players. The main component of his downfall was his overestimation of the squad. Moyes was given two transfer windows to make his intended changes, and he, for the most part, spurned these chances. This, along with his awful interview {technique}? - saying "we'll try", "we'll do our best" etc for a club of Manchester United's stature signaled he wasn't a leader figure that instilled the belief and devotion of the players. If LVG was to go into the 14/15 season without signing any of the players from this summer I imagine the placement on the league table would be relatively similar to last year. But he's been decisive and shown conviction in what he wants to implement and achieve. £150 million pales in comparison to the money that is lost as a consequence of poor results on the pitch. For a top squad in 2014 to overhaul a considerable amount of their squad for ~ £200 million, it's not even that much of a deal in relative terms.
Moyes was unlucky too to have an incompetent like woodward as his CEO when Fergsuon had an experienced Gill. Not Moyes fault.
Basically this. but with a bit more. Clubs are always less willing to splash the cash after a successful season - it's brought down plenty of managers. Mourinho at Chelsea got less and less cash to spend season after season, and Chelsea went gradually backwards as a result, Ancelotti and Mancini were both expected to stick with their title winning squads without major investment, and then fired when they failed to repeat their previous success. And Wenger's sides went backwards quite a way after every title they won. Despite all the evidence that 90% of title winning sides need substantial investment to keep at the top level, boards at all clubs don't seem to believe it, and thus the title is rarely retained. I think the issue was even more significant at Utd, where the board had gotten so used to SAF being there or thereabouts every year regardless of how much we spent that they just assumed it would carry on, and didn't realise how much money needed to be spent after SAF left.
Sure. I have same views on some of these But Moyes reckoned without the Ferguson factor. That is, some players who were very good with Ferguson would never be the same with any other manager. These are the Fergie players: Hernandez, welbeck, Rio, Vidic, and a few others. £300m is nothing to what the GGs will recoup in getting United back to the top. In a strange way, that blip if it is temporary could increase the global support and the brand for the GGs.
I thought for sure Moyes would be near the top... and even after disaster season- he could get United back up in top 4 in his 2nd season. Moyes did wonders with Everton got them challenging for Europe on no budget. Hard to say what exactly went wrong with him at United... he should have done better.
Maybe Moyes always punched above his weight at Everton. In all fairness he did very well on a limited budget. But the move to United was a step too much. A lot of us thought he was the right man for the job, but t didn't succeed. The only saving grace is that despite an abysmal season last year, we didn't end up with Jose and his over inflated ego. Whether LVG is the right choice, time will only tell, all we can do it trust him. His track record is pretty impressive.
Managers as well as players are crushed by the weight of expectations. Frank OFarrell, Dave sexton, Big Ron before Ferguson.
Because moyes could not get this level of player. Van gaal does what he wants. Like a real united manager.
Thats why we need continuity Christian. Going down that road of constantly changing managers is a recipe for disaster
