Wickham is a hot prospect but turning him into a successful premiership player is far from guaranteed. I also think £8.1m rising to £12m is pretty expensive for an unrealised prospect. I wouldn't have wanted us to spend that much on him.

Gardner, good player and would have done a job for us as a backup CM. I think this is a good bit of business for them.

Larsson. Don't rate him, never have. He thinks too much of himself and wants too much in wages. Glad he is being overpaid by them instead of us.

I would also add that if you compare those three to Cabaye, Ba and Marveaux I think I would take all three of ours any day. We also only had to spend £4.3m on ours whilst they will have spent £16.5m on theirs and they have a smaller turnover than us so the extra cost is harder for them to justify.

Final point - there are 19 other teams in the prem and I really don't get that caught up on what the Mackems do. Unlike them I don't rate our season on which one of us does better, we have more to look forward to than that.

If we're going back to January then we're winning again, we got more for Carroll.

Yeah we've sold Carroll and Nolan, they've sold Bent and Henderson. We both have money (capital) to spend but they have a much smaller turnover which means that they have to watch what they spend more closely because the additional expenses (wages etc) that come with it will be harder for them to accommodate and still hope to break even. I am assuming that they are at least making some effort to comply with the FIFA fair play rules.

In any case I think we have done much better business so far. IMO we have obtained three better players and have spent much less capital. Wages are hard to compare because I haven't seen figures but Larsson we know will be expensive and I'm guessing that they threw money at Wickham to convince him to join them instead of going to the Bin Dippers.

We were after him a while ago, but the price put us off I think.

Wickham's not a bad player, good feet for a tall lad and good upper body strength (the archetypal English Centre-Forward, then). In all likelihood I think he'll struggle for a bit, bar some good fortune, then find his feet in the Premier League come Christmas-time, before becoming an established top-flight player. <ok>

PS. He's got a short fuse as well, so Bruce will have to watch that aspect of his game.

PS(2). That was aimed at the Mackem fan, obviously.

Be honest. Apart from Ba, had you heard of the other 2 signings you made previous to you signing them? If you had you must have much more knowledge than 99% of other EPL fans, no one I know knew who they were before.

Saying you've made better signings is a joke.

Ba - injury waiting to happen
    Marveux - who?
Don't even know the name of the other mystery player you signed.

I knew all of them, and just because you haven't heard of them, it doesn't mean they're no good.

Wickham's 'one for the future', so when he doesn't score 20 goals next season, and knowing how impatient Sunderland fans are, you'll probably realise that signing proven players is actually the wisest choice.

Let's compare them one on one then, shall we?

    Ba v Wickham.
Wickham has failed to score regularly in the Championship, cost 8mil, rising to 12/13. Ba is proven in the Bundesliga and Premier League, averaging just short of a goal every other game in his career, cost nowt.

    Cabaye v Gardner
Gardner took Birmingham into the Championship, signed to be a goalscoring midfielder, yes? 17 career goals, and more than half of them came last season. Cabaye meanwhile excelled in Ligue 1, bringing a historic league and cup double to Lille and Champions League qualification, along with breaking into the France national team.

    Marveaux v Larsson
OK I dont know loads about Marveaux, but we know Larsson is never going to set the league alight. Great crosser and excellent from a dead ball. Can also play RM/RB and isnt particularly fast or technically gifted. Congratulations, you've signed Ryan Taylor.

Did I say that? Sounds like someone making up **** to me.

Every player has a chance of flopping but looking at Cabaye and Wickham.

Cabaye - Won the League and Cup and qualified for the Champions League, being an integral part of Lille. Also a French International.

Wickham - 9 goals in 41 games in the Championship in a team that finished mid-table.

Looking at that, gives me a bit more confidence in Cabaye not flopping, compared to Wickham.

Ba & Marveux are obvious risks.

The other guys have already answered this very well so I won't labour the point! :)

Sorry fella I do know a fair bit about Ba and Cabaye and a little about Marveaux. I also know even more about Wickham, Gardner and Larsson and know that they are nothing to get too excited about. And to repeat I think you have paid too much for Wickham.

The difference between Ba and Wickham is that Wickham has knees :)

(before you go on, I'm not knocking Ba who's a very good player, but he's a risk like Wickham is, but for different reasons)
