If he didn't know there was interest from clubs apart from Sunderland he must walk round with a bag over his head. No, there must've been a reason why he was happy to go there. Perhaps people find it hard to believe that not all players go for the biggest club all the time?
You don't know that neither made a formal bid. Maybe Sunderland offered alot more in wages ? It may just be a case of he is not keen on Liverpoll ( not everyone loves them the way you do ) Admittedly Liverpool are a bigger club but it doesn't mean they are automatic choice for every player. For example he will get first team football at Sunderland, whilst he would have been a squad player in the immediate future at Liverpool.
A times journalist tweeted a bit ago that everyone expected him to go to Liverpool, even Ipswich. Wickham is a Liverpool fan btw, and preferred us over Sunderland, but we didn't want to match Sunderlands bid, so what can you do.
KE. He joined Sunderland because they were the only club to make a formal offer.I reckon he would have joined Man United if they made a formal offer. They didn't and he didn't join them.Which would you chose, playing for a manager that has a reputation for nurturing young players and bringing them on,or a nitwit like Steve Bruce whose had more clubs than Nick Faldo and failed at every one of them.I know which one I would choose. And I don't think regular first team football comes into it in the long term.
Exactly - if I had a choice I would choose Sunderland as you would expect any United fan to say ( and my dad is a Sunderland season ticket holder ). The kid probably knows he needs regular playing time to reach his potential and I don't think he would have been a starter a Liverpool for a few years. I don't know if Liverpool were in for him but neither odes you or anyone else at the minute. Long term maybe it doesn't come into it but to reach the level he wants to he will have to play regular in the short term ( then put in a transfer request to go to a bigger club ).
I do wish the lad all the best. He seems like a crackin prospect and if he does well, I can see him going far in his career. First-team football might have come into it but in the end we can't do anything about it.
I do rate this guy, but I just don't see the sense in us paying £13mil (depending on add-on's) on a palyer that was going to be our 4th choice striker. Good luck to the guy and I think he has made the best decision for his own career.
